The rise of the political Islam in Algeria is an outcome of the crisis of the rentier state. Whereas the rentier state allowed little ground for secular opposition the Islamist movement succeeded in creating a dense network of various forms of organizations. These are able to mobilize different social forces with particular resources to joint action due to their reference to Islam. Despite its common ideological roots, however, the Islamist movement is not monolithic but internally divided over its objectives & strategies. Adapted from the source document.
