The Film as a Medium of Scientific Diffusion
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 26, Heft 3, S. 438-441

Man faces a challenge in the speed at which the world is changing, the rapid pace at which the quantity of information is growing, important information that must be transmitted quickly & comprehensively. The problem peculiar to filming is that not all sociologists know how to make a film. The first stage in film making is the procurement of information, followed by translation of the concept of ideas into the language of moving pictures. In filming, one cannot use reality as it is found one must rearrange it. One fundamental question in filming is what is a documentary. The documentary encompasses a heterogeny of motifs rarely found in other aspects of the medium. The science film & the documentary are the films which most frequently lack musicality, thrill, & rhythm. The most important criterion for the quality of a film is how the audience receives it. In the DISCUSSION, Isac Chiva (Coll of France, Paris), states that certain elements of the tools of analysis & analytical expression of the social sciences should be renewed in order to "break new ground." Paul Batscha (OECD, Paris France), wonders if films are informationally economical, or an economical means of communication. David A. Goslin (National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences, Washington DC), believes that when a film is made, the script should not be written by the social scientists, but rather he should provide the film maker with the concepts to convey.
