Child sexual abuse is often perceived differently based on characteristics of the victim and the perpetrator. However, unknown is whether variations in perceptions occur when the relationship to and gender of the victim are manipulated—particularly when the offender is a woman. The current study sought to explore whether authority role (neighbor, teacher, family, or clergy) and victim gender affect perceived outcomes for the victim. A factorial vignette design was used to randomly assign participants to one of eight conditions, and a series of analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were conducted to assess differences in perceived victim outcomes for the vignettes. Results showed significant differences for authority role, victim gender, and the interactions between authority and victim gender for nearly all dependent variables. Respondents recognized that the scenarios presented were damaging and harmful; however, certain authority positions (i.e., teachers) were sexualized leading to diminished perceptions of negative outcomes, particularly for male victims.

ABSTRACTThis research examines whether physical punishment towards children in Méxican immigrant and native‐born Latinx families of Mexican heritage households varies across immigrant generational status and if physical punishment is associated with important measures of culture: familismo, traditional machismo, acculturation to the United States and enculturation to México. Data from a sample of households in El Paso County, Texas, are analysed using Firth logistic regression. Findings show that physical punishment is lowest in first‐generation immigrant households but, in sharp contrast, highest in 1.5‐generation immigrant households, suggesting the need for more precise measurement of immigration status as such differentiation can be masked with a more general approach to measuring immigrant generation. Findings also indicate that enculturation to México is protective towards physical punishment, while measures of acculturation, familismo and traditional machismo are not associated with this behaviour in multivariate models.

Perceptions of child sexual abuse and statutory rape vary based on the gender of the victim, the perpetrator, and the combination of both. We extend existing research to examine attributions of responsibility and punitive preferences for student victims in student–teacher sexual relationships contingent on the gender dyad of the student and teacher and the interaction between the gender dyad and respondent gender. Participants ( N = 648) were randomly assigned to vignettes wherein the gender of the student and teacher were manipulated (female teacher/male student; female teacher/female student; male teacher/female student; male teacher/male student). Overall, respondents were "pro-victim," though results indicate significant differences in respondent gender and how the gender dyads were perceived. Students in the male same-sex dyads were attributed less responsibility than other students. Furthermore, men were less likely to perceive the student as a victim, and women were more likely to indicate the student should be punished.

AbstractSocial media use by law enforcement agencies has been on the rise in recent years. Given that engaging with the community online has shown significant impact for businesses, there is reason to believe that law enforcement agencies will also benefit from this type of media use. However, success with social media is contingent upon user engagement. Research on law enforcement agencies' social media use is limited, and examinations of community engagement with law enforcement via social networking sites such as Facebook are non-existent. This study adds to the literature by examining user engagement with social media posts from a law enforcement agency in a large metropolis in Louisiana. Findings indicate that there are significant differences in engagement by the type, time, and content of the posts. Based on these findings, implications for practitioners and law enforcement agencies are discussed.

Doping, or performance enhancing drug use, has long been a social and health problem among athletes. Despite the issues associated with doping and the illegality of using these drugs, little criminological research has examined why athletes engage in this deviant behavior. The present study seeks to do so by applying key theoretical concepts derived from, and testing the predictive efficiency of, situational action theory on professional athletes' past, current, and future performance enhancing drug use. We employ self-report data from a random sample of 680 professional athletes from Rasht, Iran. Ordinary least squares regression is used to analyze these data. Findings suggest that crime propensity and criminogenic exposure increase athletes' doping behavior. In addition, we find the interaction term between crime propensity and criminogenic exposure influences performance enhancing drug use among professional athletes, while increasing the model's predictive power. Finally, in contrast to situational action theory, we find that known correlates of deviance (education, age, and gender) still influence athletes' doping behavior even when key theoretical variables are included in the model.
