Nineteenth-century guarantees of equality for all Mexicans in Spanish liberal postulates, texts written during the insurgencies, & the Iguala Plan are examined. These texts denounced slavery & gave citizenship & formal juridical equality to the Indians, but polarization of social classes served to keep the indigenous population without effective equality; even liberal legislation was insufficient to solve the problems facing the Indians. Their disadvantaged position made it difficult to practice their equal rights, especially in elections. Adapted from the source document.
