The aim of this paper is to suggest how the material turn in sociology could benefit from a re-theorizing around wider understandings of disposal. The argument is that it is not enough to document how spaces for dwelling are produced and consumed; their building and use also entail a disposal of place that has to account for how the materials that make up a dwelling get arranged and 'placed' as moralities. Taking spaces for living and eating as its object of analysis, each section of this paper examines a different aspect of modernity, bringing the kitchen-diner 'front stage'. Avoiding a ubiquitous conflation of disposal with waste – whereby 'excess' is dismissed out of hand as redundant and non-productive to design – the analysis goes on to suggest how modernity advances its orders through our making the 'belongings' of collective identity more detachable and by our thinning the 'stickiness' of cultural institutions.

Questions of identity, the nuance of self to context or culture, continue to dominate despite a fashion to imagine 'structures' of class, status and ethnicity as becoming less demanding and, hence, more fluid and open to choice. In contrast to a picture of individuals suspended in fluids of their own making, this article introduces the idea of identity being punctualized: a 'revealing' of each specified identity within the here and now; and in response to the 'demand' of others. Accepting there is a positioning effect, requiring those making demands to be in a position to make their specific reading on identity, the article draws on Henry James's novel The Ambassadors, to illustrate a timing effect, in which each 'call' demands a display of identity that annuls other 'calls' – precisely by overtaking these in the here and now. These demands arguably overlap with Heidegger's formulation, in which the demanding relation is general and is presented as the effect of technology: technology transforms everything in nature, including ourselves, into things 'standing in advance'. Relations are not attenuated, so much as it matters more what identity is being produced (and when).

Munro uses the natural garden as a means of understanding shifts in space & time &, thus, the current disorganization in contemporary institutional life. Classical & romantic landscapes are explored. Incorporating literature & poetry, Munro concludes that clarity was never the goal of either landscape. However, it is argued that clarity is becoming a modern sublime. Munro concludes that against the fetish of clarity, gardens embody a solidity that can ground thinking. The displacement of formal knowledge is linked with the contrasting classical project of learning. The aim of this paper is to rework contemporary notions of power by acknowledging discretion and membership as the `other' side of an increasingly familiar story of organizational domination through calculation and surveillance. The paper first identifies neglected aspects of power, particularly associated with a discretionary ability to defer affirmations of membership. Such power effects might seem ephemeral and temporary, but when considered alongside translation effects generated by the technologies of managing, particularly accounting numbers, it becomes clearer that discretion can be both redistributed and accumulated in organizations. The ensuing power effects become extended across space and time. It is argued therefore that any full reworking of power needs to consider how `centres of discretion' are created simultaneously alongside `centres of calculation'.

This article explores the topic of home in terms of the art of dwelling. We set out to show that what people "keep" affects their experience of dwelling. Keeping, in this analysis, grants relational extension (Latimer 2009a, 2009b; Munro, 1996; Strathern, 1991; Latimer and Munro 2006), creating and reproducing worlds that bind. As we illustrate, the meaning of home for Euro-Americans can be understood as gravitating from feelings of belonging being anchored within specific locales to matters of identity being entangled in locutions that address the figure of self. In taking up Heidegger's (1978) argument that dwelling is thinking as much as it is "building," we go on to trouble how reflection, when conducted in the mode of comparison rather than contemplation, conflates keeping with issues of choice.
