SUMMARY: Harriet Murav sees the interpretation of the supra in Harsha Ram's article as advancing a third element within the binary opposition of the colonizer and the colonized: a national cultural form that escapes the confines of Benedict Anderson's modular nationality. Murav accepts Ram's approach, but problematizes the application of the term "sovereignty" (referring to Chatterjee, whose model Ram applies in his study) in the structural situation of absent political power. She discusses this in relation to Yiddish literature and the Jewish national imagination in the Russian empire and early USSR. The phrase 'e proboscis unum,' a parody on the more familiar Latin phrase that means 'out of many one' is taken from the courtroom scene of the 1964 Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! In this scene, the entire cast is under arrest for disturbing the peace, but the young impoverished clerk Cornelius Hackl takes the opportunity to proclaim his love for the milliner Irene Molloy in the song 'It only takes a moment.' The matchmaker Dolly pokes fun at the judge, the figure of authority, by commenting on the appearance of his nose, which she characterizes as 'a flaming beacon of justice' and 'living symbol of the motto of this great land,' 'e proboscis unum.' The bickering, fighting crowd, however, in spite of the parody, are transformed into a community as they witness the young man's declaration. As this episode shows, popular culture reads the law and the courts as making possible a space for personal transformation and transformative sociality. The recent debate about same-sex marriage in Massachusetts shows that both individual persons and the law itself are open to a process of mutual transformation. The chapter uses Hello, Dolly!, the 2003 Massachusetts Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage, and Shoshana Felman's The Juridical Unconscious to argue that the study of law and literature is crucial in the current academic environment in which many critics, influenced by Giorgio Agamben, argue that law and the courts are merely the space for the exercise of the state's sovereign power to carry out punishment. 'Violating the Canon" makes the case for an alternative Jewish and literary space in the context of Soviet war literature by comparing works by Vasilii Grossman, Il'ia Erenburg, and the Yiddish author Der Nister. In this article, Harriet Murav distinguishes the question of literary value from the question of identity and separates out the problem of determining the typicality or representativeness of a work from the problem of engaging the complexity of its meanings. Jewish literature from the Soviet Union ought to be recovered from the constraints that subordinate it to Cold War-era sociological and political constraints. Mikhail Bakhtin, Werner Sollors, and Michael Warner provide approaches that allow access to more fluid and open-ended readings.

В статье рассматривается роль насилия и боли в формировании базовых советских поствоенных исторических нарративов на примере "Повести о настоящем человеке" (1946) Бориса Полевого. Будучи типичным произведением военного времени, повесть Полевого являет собой пример "эстетизации протеза" ( prosthetic narrative ), показывая трансформацию насилия и боли в инструмент национальной победы. В медицине протез – искусственный орган; риторически "протез" также используется как добавление или заместитель чего-то. Повесть Полевого является "протезом" в качестве добавления к его журналистским отчетам о Нюрнбергском процессе: к рассказам о фашистских преступлениях она добавляет историю русского героизма, формируя гибридный жанр, сочетающий биографию, журналистику и беллетристику.
