Local dynamics and global engagements of the Islamic modernist movement in contemporary Indonesia: the case of Muhammadiyah (2000-2020)
In: Journal of current Southeast Asian affairs, Band 39, Heft 2, S. 290-309
ISSN: 1868-4882
This article examines the engagement of Indonesian Islamic civil society organisations in the international arena by paying particular attention to the role of the Islamic modernist movement, Muhammadiyah. Beyond its vibrant religious and social activism in the domestic context of Indonesia, Muhammadiyah has, in the past thirty years, engaged in various international affairs such as peacekeeping operations, humanitarian activities, and politics. This engagement indicates that Muhammadiyah has attempted to strengthen its international exposure and contribute to the global community. By examining Muhammadiyah's vision and activism, both discursively and practically, this article seeks to know why it is so essential for Indonesian Islamic civil society organisations, such as Muhammadiyah, to be involved in the international arena, and what Muhammadiyah engagement means for the global picture of Islam in the Muslim world. THE LIFE OF THE OLD: PRIOR TO NATIONAL WELFARE PROGRAM
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate the lives of elderly people after their retirement without welfare program supporting their daily needs. Methodology: The research was conducted by employing unstructured interview sessions with the respondents. In selecting the respondents, the snowball method was used. They were met at a market, on a rice field, or on the main roads in Solo. Later, the researchers were brought to their homes so the researchers had a chance to look at the condition of their homes. The respondents often looked glad as perhaps they felt that there are people who care about them. Result: The research results show that most pensioners, due to the unavailability of the much-needed welfare programs, work in the informal sector. This suggests the needs of a well-managed informal sector as well as the necessity of welfare programs. Applications: This research can be used for the universities, teachers and education students. Novelty/Originality: The Indonesian government has not been able to provide a sufficient pension and welfare program for them. The respondents were senior citizens who live in Surakarta, Indonesia. They were interviewed about their daily activities and what they do to fulfill their daily needs.

Muhammadiyah's Moderation Stance in the 2019 General Election: Critical Views from Within
This study focuses on the way in which Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia's largest Islamic organizations, stood in the 2019 General Election. Like its counterpart Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah has marked the moderation of Islam in Indonesia, different from Islam elsewhere in the Middle East. Since its establishment, Muhammadiyah has urged its members not to join any specific political party, but rather to take a moderate position in political pragmatism and support patriotism in broader national interest. Likewise, in the 2019 election, Muhammadiyah did not organizationally support any candidates, citing its "middle way" approach. However, this study identifies a dualism in the political attitudes of Muhammadiyah's elites. Even without official orders or prohibitions from the central leadership, some Muhammadiyah members got involved and carried their organization's attributes to support certain candidates, resulting in political division within the organization. Some members of the organization took a clear political stance, whereas others remain neutral. This created tension within the organization in both elite and grass-root level. The main data for this study were collected through interviews, unstructured discussions, and focus group discussions with several Muhammadiyah elites.[Artikel ini melihat posisi yang diambil salah satu organisasi Islam terbesar di Indonesia, Muhammadiyah, dalam Pemilu 2019.

Indonesia as a legal welfare state: A prophetic-transcendental basis
INTRODUCTION: The modern welfare state concept is based on individualistic and liberal social contracts that prioritize individual interests with liberalist, partial and non-holistic hegemonies. The welfare state concept has failed in directing citizens to achieve justice, peace, and welfare. The basic aim of the Republic of Indonesia's formation is to form a welfare country. But the Indonesian constitutional articles do not have the power to form a welfare society compared to those of other states, such as Norway, Japan, the USA, and Malaysia, whose constitutions aim to achieve welfare. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to explore the formulation of Indonesia as the Prophetic Transcendental-Based Legal Welfare State. The urgency of this research is on the effort of model invention, or a new postulate on the form of the Indonesian Legal Welfare State. METHODS: This is normative-juridical research with a philosophical approach to find and explore the formulation of Indonesia as the Prophetic Transcendental-Based Legal Welfare State. CONCLUSION: This research found that as a Legal Welfare State, Indonesia inspirits Pancasila as the moral-spiritual guidance in all developmental policies on the national law, economy, politics, and culture. Thus, the direction of the state's development is inseparable from its roots, namely the prophetic and transcendental Pancasila. NOVELTY: The previous researches discussed Indonesia as a welfare state only based on the determining legislation or laws. But this research discusses the philosophical aspect based on the thoughts of Indonesia's founding fathers.
