Seit der Gründung der südostasiatischen Staatengemeinschaft ASEAN hat die UdSSR diese als verlängerten Arm des Westens in der Region betrachtet. In der Tat hatte und hat die Vereinigung die sicherheitspolitische Funktion, ein Ausgreifen des Kommunismus in der Region zu verhindern. Die Beziehungen der UdSSR zu ASEAN waren einem Wandel unterworfen. Der anfänglichen Frontstellung folgte in der ersten Hälfte der 70er Jahre eine Phase der Annäherung, die dann, angesichts des starken machtpolitischen Ausgreifens der UdSSR und Vietnams in Südostasien, in erneute Konfrontation umschlug. Die ASEAN- Politik der UdSSR insgesamt bezeichnet der Autor als opportunistisch und beurteilt sie negativ, auch wenn zeitweilig zu einzelnen Mitgliedstaaten recht gute Beziehungen hergestellt werden konnten. Er betont, daß sich an dieser Politik auch unter Gorbacev nicht viel geändert hat. Das Buch enthält einen umfangreichen Dokumentenanhang. (BIOst-Rsg)

Furthermore, the author analyses the activities in the financial markets, which comprise the money market, the Asian Dollar Market, the Asian Bond Market, the security market and the financial future markets.
