Der Verfasser begeift den Konflikt in Tschetschenien nicht als antiterroristische Aktion, sondern als Kampf gegen eine bewaffnete separatistische Bewegung. Vor diesem Hintergrund skizziert er einige Varianten der Entwicklung der Beziehungen zwischen dem föderalen Zentrum und den separatistischen Kräften in Tschetschenien. In diesem Zusammenhang geht er auch auf die Frage ein, ob die Errichtung eines "Cordon sanitaire" von Nutzen sein könnte. Darüber hinaus werden Stabilisierungsmaßnahmen im Hinblick auf Inguschetien und Dagestan und Probleme der Beziehungen zu Georgien und Aserbeidschan angesprochen. Die Rolle des fundamentalen Islamismus in der Region wird gleichfalls thematisiert. (BIOst-Mrk)
