This comparative analysis of the structure of Polish & American Catholic laities' attitudes toward legalized abortion focuses on the dimensions & factors influence public opinion (PO), as determined by General Social Survey data, 1990-1993, for both countries. Latent class models are used to analyze a set of 6 scenarios regarding approval/disapproval of legalized abortion. Substantial similarity is found in the structure of PO in both Poland & the US; Catholics appear to either (1) disapprove of all 6 reasons for legal abortion, (2) approve of all 6 reasons for legal abortion, or (3) adopt an intermediate position, approving of ethical/medical, but not social, reasons for abortion. Polish vs US Catholics are more likely to have made a break from the Church, approving of abortion for social reasons, especially recently (1992/93). A latent logit model is used to examine the differential influence of church attendance, cohort, & education on Catholics' attitudes toward abortion for social reasons. 5 Tables, 2 Figures, 44 References.
