"As the world has become increasingly urbanised and planetary wellbeing ever more threatened, questions have emerged over just what the priorities should be for how we live in cities. Clearly for many the current ways of planning and managing city environments are not working, given so many of its human and non-human inhabitants struggle on a daily basis to maintain their wellbeing and survival. Different approaches to city development are crucial if they are to be inclusive places where all can thrive. Ensuring that cities are safe and sustainable and provide a level of care for all their residents places a significant mandate on those who manage cities and on planners in particular. This book examines all the parts of the city where care needs to be incorporated, how we plan, create nurturing environments, include all who live there, build sensitively, support meaningful livelihoods, and enable compassionate governance. With planners in mind this book examines why care is needed in the urban environment, and drawing on real world examples examines how it can be applied in an effective and empowering fashion"--

This book examines regional responses to marginality by highlighting social innovation, local capacity and new path formations in what are often seen as economically weak regions where policy and institutional considerations play a key role. Divided into three parts, it covers a wide range of topics related to geographical marginality from various angles, on both regional and local scales. The first part focuses on the role of social innovation and illustrates the themes of social innovation and new localism, local revitalization and social entrepreneurship. The second part then addresses the issues of economic responses, valorization, resource use and local action in response to marginalization. Lastly, the third part explores various policies and measures taken to respond to marginality and intensify regional development in marginal areas. .

Die Politik wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung auf lokaler Ebene stößt in der Regierung und in den entwicklungsorientierten Kreisen Südafrikas auf wachsendes Interesse. Vor dem Hintergrund der generellen Wirtschaftspolitik der Regierung beleuchten die Autoren kritisch diesen lokalen Aspekt und arbeiten die Faktoren heraus, die für einen Erfolg lokaler Entwicklung unerläßlich sind. An den auf diesem Gebiet bisher in Südafrika gemachten Erfahrungen gemessen, wird die effektive Politik und Praxis lokaler Entwicklung einer kritischen Analyse unterzogen. The impact of mine closure can have a devastating effect on the local economies of the towns that they once supported. Drawing on comparative, international material, this article examines the nature and effectiveness of the local economic development responses that have been initiated in the former coal-mining towns in northern KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Although a range of innovative locally identified strategies have been embarked upon, considerably greater effort and investment will be needed in order to catalyse significant and meaningful regeneration endeavours.
