The adoption of ethical relativism as the working assumption of social science is not justified by the evidence. The assumption usually rests upon authorities from sister disciplines, but these are rarely specified. Most social scientists have abandoned the commonsense view that the scientific study of man can contribute to his happiness by helping him formulate appropriate social & individual goals & choose the right means of achieving them. Rather, they usually demonstrate excessive confidence in scientific facts & methods &, conversely, profess excessive scepticism about the fruitfulness of any attempt to resolve issues of value. "Classic and contemporary studies in social psychology is a combined text and reader that presents social psychology firsthand through the influential studies that have shaped the field. Each topic includes annotated readings to demstify the research design process and help students understand how theory connects to experimental design in social psychology. To prepare readers for concepts within each original journal article, Todd D. Nelson discusses pivotal themes, ideas, and methods in introductory sections that precede the reading. Following each article, Nelson reinforces key topics and links the article to related concepts within the field." -- Back cover
