The widespread presence of Anglicisms in the Macedonian language is undisputable. Anglicisms are particularly conspicuous in political discourse as politicians seem to have pronounced tendency to insert English borrowings in their public statements, speeches, discussion and debates quite frequently. While politicians thus clearly attempt to reinforce the persuasiveness of the political messages they impart to the masses, the question that arises is whether the general public endorses or condemns such a linguistic strategy. The aim of this paper is to shed some light on Macedonian native speakers' perceptions and understanding of a list of Anglicisms that have become an integral part of Macedonian political discourse. For the purposes of this research, a tailor-made questionnaire was conducted among Macedonian speakers of different ages and educational levels. The aim was twofold – to inspect the influence of age and education on the informants' understanding of Anglicisms, and to ascertain whether they perceive Anglicisms as a serious threat to the purity of their mother tongue or as a welcome addition that enriches it and increases its expressive potential.

From 1960s onwards sexist language intended to denigrate, objectify and trivialize women has been seriously exposed internationally and huge efforts were made to replace it with gender-neutral language. However, to date, sexism has not been fully suppressed and it is especially conspicuous in relation to women who assume active roles in public life. This study has both qualitative and quantitative design and looks into the presence of overt and implicit sexism (as categorized by Mills, 2008) in journalistic discourse and the role of sexist language in molding the image of modern day women politicians. For the purposes of this study, we conduct a critical discourse analysis of a corpus of 40 news articles published on various online news portals and electronic platforms of traditional media. All analyzed articles comment on the political statements and actions of two Macedonian female politicians currently in office – the Minister of Defense and the Mayor of the city of Skopje. The findings suggest that Macedonian journalistic discourse, under the pretext that politicians' dealings need to be monitored closely, scrutinized and even criticized, still leaves the door slightly open for both overt and implicit sexist linguistic forms, which, in turn, depicts female politicians as ill-suited for this type of professional occupation.

Abstract: By means of critical discourse analysis (CDA), the aim of this research is to shed some light on the resignation speeches of the last three British Prime Ministers – Gordon Brown, David Cameron, and Theresa May. The study investigates the topics the three politicians cover in their resignation speeches in light of the socio-political circumstances relevant at the time when each of the resignation speeches was delivered. It also attempts to disclose how these topics assist the politicians in achieving their goals and whether any common pattern in all three speeches occurs. Additionally, the study looks into the rhetorical devices (positive and negative lexis and various figures of speech) politicians employ to make their resignation speeches sound more convincing, reassuring and less detrimental to their political reputation. The analysis showed that in all three resignation speeches, the politicians dwell on their experiences and achievements as PM and offer a profuse praise for their country. Understandably, positive lexis abounds in tackling these topics. In stating the reasons for their resignation, they only hint at who the 'culprit' for their failure is. This means that no overt criticism and almost no negative lexis is tracked down in the analysed speeches. Additionally, the analysis reveals that although figurative speech is only moderately used, still it is an indispensable part of political resignation speeches which endows them with versatility and effectiveness. Collocations play a vital role in language by making it sound more natural, precise and interesting. Hence, handling collocations with special care and vigilance should be high on translators' agendas. The aim of this study was to determine how Macedonian translators fare in rendering lexical collocations from Macedonian into English in journalistic texts. The questions addressed were the following: Are lexical collocations correctly rendered from Macedonian into English?; Are the same types of lexical collocations preserved in the translated texts?; What are the high-frequency and the low-frequency lexical collocations in the original and translated texts?; What translation strategies are employed in rendering lexical collocations? The results of the study indicate that there is a high level of awareness on the part of translators when it comes to rendering collocations correctly. Surprisingly, there were also more similarities than differences in the internal structure of TL and SL lexical collocations, with the most prominent types in both languages being: adjective + noun and verb + noun. Finally, literal translation was the most frequently employed translation strategy, yielding mostly positive results in all likelihood because all of the analysed collocations were used in the domain of politics and were cross-linguistic. The persuasive power of political discourse almost entirely rests on the skillful usage of language. Only politicians equipped with a plethora of linguistic tools manage to truly lay claims on political power and authority. This study seeks to analyze the linguistic strategies Macedonian politicians utilize in their political speeches, in order to construct their and their opponents' roles in the political arena, and to present a reality which simultaneously legitimizes their ideology and undermines the ideology of their adversaries. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis, this study is qualitative in nature and its aim is to investigate how politicians in a very concrete socio-political context with their choice of lexis, syntactic structures, and figures of speech, make an attempt to successfully present themselves and, at the same time, mar their opponents' repute. The study shows that, apart from the evident similarities, yet certain differences appear in the use of the linguistic strategies between the politician who currently holds the political control and the one who is aspiring to come to power.

Analysing and discussing Shakespeare's works still present an immense challenge and undertaking not only to literary critics, but also to psychologists, philosophers, politicians, artists, language and literature teachers and their students, etc. Four centuries after Shakespeare's death his fame and popularity still have neither subsided nor lost their intensity. Hence, it is no exaggeration to state that his plays literally transcend time and culture and are rightfully called immortal or 'of all time'. This certainly could be attributed to his investing profusely in diverse and solid building blocks such as, for instance, an innovative language use while compiling his opulent corpus of literary works. The present paper aims to deal with one aspect of his works which without doubt contributes greatly to the timelessness of his works – the immaculate depiction of a wide range of human emotions which are an inextricable segment of his full-fledged characters. The point we purpose to make is that while modern men and women can certainly boast about evolving and progressing in every conceivable sense of the word, yet, they can very closely and distinctly relate to their distant predecessors when it comes to the realm of emotions they experience and the ways in which they normally manifest them.

Considering the intricate nature of verbal irony one might assume that ironic expressions have no place in formal speech. However, only a superficial glance at a political speech, reveals that the above-stated assumption is far from the truth. Verbal irony appears to be one the favorite "weapons" in the hands of politicians, particularly, when they are determined to disparage their political opponents' repute in the eyes of the public. Not all ironic utterances in formal speech are of the same type. Ironic utterances may appear in many different forms (ironic complements, ironic criticism, ironic questions, offers, orders, promises, apologies, etc.). This particular study focuses on analyzing verbal irony employed in political TV discussions and debates. The aim is to determine which types of ironic utterances are more and which are less frequently employed in formal speech. Abstract In times of huge political, social, economic and religious turmoil, the world increasingly witnesses a rise in language usage for the purposes of humiliating, dehumanizing and defaming non-likeminded individuals or groups of individuals. The distinguishing feature of this inflammatory rhetoric, also widely known as hate speech, seems to be its ability to spread with the speed of light, infecting societies with intolerance, hatred and aggressive behavior, which, in turn, very often translates into personal tragedies and mass atrocities. Social media like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many others, definitely play a critical role in disseminating hate speech. The platforms that they provide for their users worldwide are utilized by various parties ranging from high-ranking individuals (e.g. politicians, government officials, journalists, distinguished public figures), to ordinary people from all walks of life, who in their urge to voice their dissent, resort to launching vicious, "virtual" attacks at their opponents. Given the "power" of hate speech and its potentially far-reaching repercussions, the aim of this paper is to approach and shed light on some of the essentials at the core of this phenomenon. In fact, the aim of the paper is to provide insights into the scope of hate speech and its realizations; the context and participants in hate speech, then, the role of social media in disseminating hate speech, and the actual legislative which regulates hate speech. All these aspects are instantiated and looked at through the prism of the latest political and social developments in our own homeland, the Republic of Macedonia. Higher education is currently under increasing pressure coming from different directions. Modern society, in general, undergoes drastic changes instigated by new economic, cultural, and political factors and trends. They are all inextricably linked to higher education, dictating and imposing alterations in its structure and performance. The advent of new technologies greatly affects the functioning and the organization of higher education. Teaching the new generations of students who are frequently dubbed 'digital natives' presents a major challenge for higher education teachers. Amidst all these intensive currents, teachers face the daunting task of keeping themselves updated with the latest insights into their specific field of interest while making personal contribution by conducting research and presenting and publishing original scientific papers. This study offers fresh insights into the current state of affairs in higher education, or more precisely, the challenges teachers in the higher education sector meet in the Republic of Macedonia.
