What Max Ways (in his BEYOND SURVIVAL) & Henry R. Luce have written is not only foolish; it is also incompatible with the US system of politics & Gov. To ask for an end to debate & issues is to destroy the pol'al & constitutional system of the US. Since the avoidance of issues is what has been systematically pursued in the last 7 yrs by the leadership of both parties & by organs of PO, such as Time it comes as a shock to be told we must now substitute 'national purpose' for a pol'al system our leaders do not understand. The national purpose adherents are not really interested in issues at all but in an abstraction they call Order. Those that seek to avoid issues & conflicts on the real problems we face use their powerful influence to soothe & reassure the US public so that decisions will be ever more difficult to come by. The doctrine of national purpose is one more drug, following hard on the heels of the quiz shows. J. A. Fishman.
