As an initial step to implement total quality management (TQM) in a small manufacturing enterprise (SME) of electrical products, we applied statistical techniques to quantify and evaluate the data collected in order to improve the quality characteristics of a selected product circuit breaker. A circuit breaker will "jump" or the current will be cut short if a current stronger than 15A passes through the equipment. The time required for the circuit breaker to stop the flow of the current is called the trip‐time. Our major concern is to find out how sensitive a 15A circuit breaker is, and how reliable is the device. We were able to confirm several dominant factors that influence the trip‐time of the circuit breaker after conducting several experiments. We used regression analysis to find out the model that best fits the relationship between the current supply and the trip‐time of the 15A circuit breaker. Meanwhile reliability testings of the circuit breaker were performed. Balanced factorial design techniques were applied in finding out the optimal combination of factors with the highest success rate of trips. The results demonstrated that the optimal combination of factors we found could bring about quality improvement of the product.

The transmission of the arboviral agents of dengue, yellow fever, Chikungunya, and Zika by Aedes mosquitoes represents expanding threats to global health. At the 69th World Health Assembly [1], the WHO Director-General Margaret Chan declared that the spread of the Zika virus was "the result of the abandon of mosquito control" by governments since the 1970s and urged Member States to mobilize more efforts and resources to prevent further spread of the diseases. The recent rise of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil prompted WHO to declare Zika as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern [2]. After limited early outbreaks in the Pacific in 2007 and 2013, the Zika virus has spread to more than 30 countries in the Americas and the Caribbean, affecting over 1.5 million people [3]. With growing evidence supporting the link between microcephaly and Zika [4, 5] and preliminary evidence confirming Aedes aegypti as the primary vector in the Brazilian outbreak [6], the mandate for control is clear and urgent.

The re-emergence of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a serious global health threat. CHIKV is an alphavirus that is transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes; therefore, their wide distribution significantly contributes to the globalization of the disease. Unfortunately, no effective antiviral drugs are available. We have identified a series of 3-aryl-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-7(6H)-ones as selective inhibitors of CHIKV replication. New series of compounds have now been synthesized with the aim to improve their physicochemical properties and to potentiate the inhibitory activity against different CHIKV strains. Among these newly synthesized compounds modified at position 3 of the aryl ring, tetrahydropyranyl and N-t-butylpiperidine carboxamide derivatives have shown to elicit potent antiviral activity against different clinically relevant CHIKV isolates with 50% effective concentration (EC) values ranging from 0.30 to 4.5 μM in Vero cells, as well as anti-CHIKV activity in human skin fibroblasts (EC = 0.1 μM), a clinically relevant cell system for CHIKV infection. ; We thank Caroline Collard and Nick Verstraeten for their excellent technical assistance in the acquisition of the antiviral data.
