The debate about the future of work has sparked a debate about how to ensure that social protection systems can provide full and effective coverage for workers in all forms of employment, including 'new' ones. While some emerging work and employment arrangements may provide greater flexibility for workers and employers, they may lead to significant gaps in social protection coverage, at a time when demands on social protection systems are increasing. It is therefore necessary to strengthen and adapt social protection systems for a changing world of work. More than ever, they have a key role in preventing poverty, reducing inequality, enhancing income security and enabling workers and their families better to navigate work and life transitions. Comprehensive approaches, including contributory and non-contributory social protection mechanisms, with equitable and sustainable financing mechanisms available through taxes or contributions, stand the best chance of offering adequate social protection to all.

To provide important evidence for the resource allocation process in Vietnam, this research was conducted to explore the return on investment (ROI) of the national colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program. A decision tree model was designed to estimate the cost and cost savings of a national screening program (ie, providing annual fecal occult blood test [FOBT], following with colonoscopy in case of FOBT positive for the medium-risk group over 50 years old) compared to no screening scenario. This was the first attempt in estimating the ROI of a public health program in Vietnam. Although there was a wide variation due to the uncertainty of the input parameters, especially regarding the coverage of the colorectal cancer screening program in the community, the calculated ROI rates in all different cases were positive, demonstrating that the national colorectal cancer screening program brought benefits to the investment. With a modest coverage of 30% of the population over the age of 50, the corresponding ROI value was 325.4% (95%UI: 321.0; 329.9). The results of this study could be used to advocate for the implementation of a national colorectal cancer screening program in terms of the monetary benefits of investing in the program.

To access the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention of preventive medicine workers in Vietnam, we conducted a cross-sectional study using a purposive convenience sample of 12 preventive medicine centers in 3 provinces of northern Vietnam (Hai Duong, a plain province, Yen Bai, a mountainous province, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam). Overall, 400 preventive medicine staff were invited to participate, and 383 questionnaires were analyzed (153 from 3 provincial centers and 230 from 9 district centers). All eligible participants completed the questionnaire, which included questions relating to general information, job satisfaction, intention to quit. We identified significant associations between turnover intention and personal factors, including age, marital status, education level, professional degree, and length of employment at the current center. The bivariate analysis also indicated that job satisfaction had an inverse relationship with turnover intention, as expected. The correlations varied between facets and overall job satisfaction, from −0.19 for community support to −0.37 for overall job satisfaction. These correlations remained significant after controlling for personal factors using hierarchical multiple regressions. The results indicated that facet and overall job satisfaction were significant predictors of turnover intention, while overall job satisfaction was the strongest predictor (β = 0.37, P < .001). This study could contribute to local system development and the international understanding of job satisfaction and turnover intention among preventive medicine workers. Addressing the aspects of job satisfaction that were found to have the lowest scores may help the preventive medicine system to retain staff.

In Vietnam, social health insurance (SHI) benefit package has been defined in a more explicit approach with the introduction of a regulation on the list of conditional reimbursed and non-reimbursed medical services. This paper aims to analyze the implementation results of this regulation from an economical perspective as well as the implementation challenges. Mix-method approach was employed. The quantitative component was employed to understand the implementation results. Desk study and qualitative components (2 inteviews with key informants from Ministry of Health; 6 discussions with key informants from provincial Social Security Offices and Departments of Health in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Tuyen Quang, Thai Binh and Soc Trang provinces; the other 23 discussions and 31 interviews with key informants from 23 selected hospitals) was employed to summarize the implementation challenges. The regulation seems to not able to mitigate the reimbursement of high-technology and expensive services in higher-level providers. There is a sign of increasing out-of-pocket payments for those regulated services in higher-level providers. It has also posed greater influence on lower-level providers in terms of the proportion of reimbursement amount rather than to higher-level hospitals. Applying World Health Organization's 6 building blocks of health system to analyze the implementation challenges, we provide policymakers evidence to improve the regulation, as well as point out the relating health system weakness need to be strengthened.

The CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) approach was originally developed for engineering education programs. However, this approach has also been adopted to support non-engineering programs. This paper aims to discuss the implementation of the CDIO approach in teacher training programs in a university in Vietnam. Five tests focusing on assessing students' competence of lesson plan preparation, lesson planning, teaching organization, student learning assessment, and teaching portfolio management were developed and administered to the experimental group of 40 last-year students and the control group of 40 last-year students. When the data were collected and analyzed with the assistance of the SPSS statistics, the p-value was .000 (p=.000 p < .05), which means that the experimental group and control group had statistically meaningful difference. The results of this study show that students enrolling in programs that implemented the CDIO approach performed better than those who enrolled in programs without the support of the CDIO approach.

In a cross-disciplinary project (LEGATO) combining inter- and transdisciplinary methods, we quantify the dependency of rice-dominated socio-ecological systems on ecosystem functions (ESF) and the ecosystem services (ESS) the integrated system provides. In the collaboration of a large team including geo- and bioscientists, economists, political and cultural scientists, the mutual influences of the biological, climate and soil conditions of the agricultural area and its surrounding natural landscape have been analysed. One focus was on sociocultural and economic backgrounds, another on local as well as regional land use intensity and biodiversity, and the potential impacts of future climate and land use change. LEGATO analysed characteristic elements of three service strands defined by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA): (a) provisioning services: nutrient cycling and crop production; (b) regulating services: biocontrol and pollination; and (c) cultural services: cultural identity and aesthetics. However, in line with much of the current ESS literature, what the MA called supporting services is treated as ESF within LEGATO. As a core output, LEGATO developed generally applicable principles of ecological engineering (EE), suitable for application in the context of future climate and land use change. EE is an emerging discipline, concerned with the design, monitoring and construction of ecosystems and aims at developing strategies to optimise ecosystem services through exploiting natural regulation mechanisms instead of suppressing them. Along these lines LEGATO also aims to create the knowledge base for decision-making for sustainable land management and livelihoods, including the provision of the corresponding governance and management strategies, technologies and system solutions.
