The aim of the article is to identify and analyse guarded centres for foreigners in Poland when considered as total institutions and the psycho-social consequences of such totalization on the officers and employees of the Border Guard who work in these centres. The above-mentioned consequences stem from their daily work in a total institution, primarily within the legal and socio-cultural conditions of the functioning of these centres and, secondly, in terms of the relationships between the staff employed in them, as well as between the staff and foreigners. "The book consists of four chapters. The first one contains information about the topic which introduce the project's characteristics, and, at the same time, provide the background for further theoretical and methodological reflection. The second chapter contains a list of research problems and questions, a presentation of the philosophical worldviews (research paradigms) of the project team who guided the planned research and which resulted in the adoption of research strategies compatible with them, and, consequently, procedures and techniques for obtaining source materials and their analysis. In the third chapter, we present a set of terms, ideas, and concepts which inspired the project team as useful tools for describing and analysing the phenomenon under study. The fourth chapter is a kind of ligature that binds together all the previous findings, it is a summary of integrating ideas, concepts, as well as the adopted research procedures and techniques"--

This text seeks to present basic knowledge on the detention of foreigners in Poland and the research perspective adopted in the project involving the authors of the papers published in this volume. The article has been divided into two parts. The first one contains characteristics of the detention of foreigners in the Polish context: directions of migration flows resulting from the location of our country, as well as the whereabouts and profiles of the centres administered by the Border Guard. Part two familiarises the reader with the specific nature of our detention study project: its conceptual apparatus, the adopted research paradigms, the applied methodology, and the challenges related to our exploratory efforts being performed in a very specific place – the guarded centres for foreigners. In the authors' intention, all this information is to constitute a useful background to the detailed considerations contained in the subsequent papers presented in this volume of the journal.

W latach 1988−1993 autorzy artykułu uczestniczyli w projekcie badawczym "Pamięć kultury żydowskiej wśród mieszkańców Podkarpacia", w ramach którego zebrano około 400 pogłębionych wywiadów z mieszkańcami Polski południowej. Materiał ten, z różnych powodów, nie został wówczas opracowany. W 2013 roku postanowiliśmy do niego powrócić w ramach nowego projektu "Strategie pamiętania o kulturze żydowskiej w Galicji". Odczytując na nowo materiał zebrany 25 lat temu, mieliśmy wyjątkową okazję zaobserwować, jak zmieniła się nasza percepcja wypowiedzi respondentów. Przede wszystkim dostrzegliśmy szereg ukrytych założeń, którymi posługiwaliśmy się, przeprowadzając wywiady. Pierwsze z nich to lokowanie naszych rozmówców w dyskursie, który Johannes Fabian określał jako "allochroniczny", a więc traktowanie ich jako reprezentantów przeszłości, nienależących do naszej wspólnej teraźniejszości i nie podlegających jej wpływowi. Drugie to zdroworozsądkowa koncepcja pamięci jako mnéme, a więc jako przekazywania w teraźniejszości zakodowanego w przeszłości obrazu wydarzeń. Trzecie to przyjęcie za pewnik, że nasi rozmówcy muszą pamiętać to, co przeżyli i że właśnie treść tych przeżyć jest tym, co nam przekazują. Odczytując na nowo zebrane wywiady, poddaliśmy te założenia rewizji. Przyjęliśmy mianowicie, że wizje przeszłości są konstruowane w teraźniejszości, że służą budowie i obronie konstruktów tożsamościowych, i że to, co mówili nam respondenci, było w istocie rezultatem skomplikowanego nakładania się na siebie różnych dyskursów, w których ujmowali oni przeszłość. Samokrytycznie też musieliśmy przyznać, że odczytanie zebranego materiału z perspektywy debat, jakie przetoczyły się przez Polskę po opublikowaniu Sąsiadów i następnych książek J. T. Grossa ujawniło naiwność, z jaką 25 lat temu podchodziliśmy do stosunków polsko-żydowskich oraz pewną tendencję do marginalizacji problematyki Zagłady na rzecz nostalgicznej wizji żydowskiej kultury. Rewizja tej naiwności pozwoliła nam na dostrzeżenie w wywiadach wątków, aluzji, znaczących przemilczeń i tym podobnych, składających się na to, co określamy jako "niepamięć", w której przeszłość ujawnia się bardziej autentycznie niż w wyartykułowanych jej obrazach.

Discussing the Polish presence in Leuven, Belgium, this article examines the concept of 'intellectual migration from Eastern Europe after 1989' on at least two levels. On the one hand, it analyzes the numbers of foreign students at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and shows that a Europeanization is taking place, not because of a growth in the number of Central Europeans students, but because of a drop in the number of Chinese students and a rise of students from Belgium's neighbouring countries. On the other hand, it compares this intellectual immigration from Poland with the larger and better known labour immigration. It appears that the categorization between heads and hands is certainly not absolute. Their paths were much more common than scholars and students suppose, with labour immigrants studying, students working, and many Poles from different classes maintaining contact with each other.
