How can I enhance, and provide evidence of, the impact of my research?
In: Nielsen , C 2020 ' How can I enhance, and provide evidence of, the impact of my research? ' Aalborg University Business School .
The purpose of this conceptual paper is to assist researchers in connecting with the notion of impact. Funding bodies, governments, and taxpayers are currently seeking value for their investments in research and a value for money perspective is dominant. Impact is therefore no longer merely a question of number of scientific publications, building a community of interest or counting patents. Rather, impact now emphasises the delivery of value to stakeholders, and innovative research must encompass this aspect. This paper surveys the literature on research impact, and presents guidelines for researchers on how to conceptualise and work towards providing evidence of the impact of their own research. The paper rests on a structuring and improvement of guidelines issued by funding bodies for creating impact. It clarifies the link between outputs, outcomes and impacts and how this can be applied to clearly communicating the evidence of overall research impact. In doing so, it aims to clarify the continuum from research exploration and output to exploitation and commercialisation. Finally, it identifies policy implications of the value - for - money perspective currently emphasised by funding bodies.

Mass atrocities and the police: a new history of ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Between April 1992 and December 1995, more than 100,000 people were killed in the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The terrible atrocities committed in this period have been much discussed and studied and many prosecuted as acts of genocide, war crimes or crimes against humanity. But so far, the academic scholarship has focused on the role of the military in these events. This has come at the expense of considering the police's role, which Nielsen here demonstrates as crucial. Nielsen traces the origins of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina to the police and associated paramilitary groups. Nielsen makes this ground-breaking case by drawing on a host of confidential archival sources, academic research and practical experience as a widely cited expert witness in the most notorious of the war crimes tribunals. His innovative new history sheds light on wider issues regarding the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the Balkan wars and the region today.

This journal has in recent years published the Spotlight series, consisting of articles which each attempt to provide an overview of the historiographical landscape in various European countries and major themes in European history. The articles have highlighted methodological developments, significant debates, and risks and challenges to historical scholarship from hostile political directions. To date, the series has included profiles of Ukrainian, Norwegian, Albanian, Hungarian, Italian, Serbian and French history, as well as insightful overviews of right-wing populism, migration history, and environmental and global history.

Imprisoning "Enemies of the State" in a Communist Dictatorship
In: Journal of Cold War studies, Band 23, Heft 4, S. 124-152
ISSN: 1531-3298
Abstract
Even though the Yugoslav Communists were expelled from the Soviet bloc in 1948, the Communist regime in Yugoslavia headed by Josip Broz Tito had embraced many of the repressive policies associated with Stalinist dictatorships. Based on newly available archival materials from Bosnia and Herzegovina, this article examines policies related to the incarceration of "enemies of the state" during the first several years of Tito's regime. By focusing on policy discussions and implementation, the article shows how government, state security, and prison officials dealt with questions relating to prison conditions, penal policy, and rehabilitation. These documents permit scholars to begin moving beyond the existing focus on well-documented events of mass killing and oppression during the early years of Communist rule—such as the Goli Otok prison camp for alleged Cominformists and mass executions in late 1944—to gain a better understanding of how Yugoslav officials viewed and debated penal policies.
