The APR and Russia's National Security

The author assesses the economic and national security of Russia's Far East. Russia's declining military might, its economic weakness, social instability and the demographic crisis in the Far East could play a fateful role in that region. The Far Eastern Region is progressively becoming less economically linked to European Russia. The author believes that the government needs to institute programs to encourage migration to the Far East. Russia's federal center also needs to pay close attention to dangerous trends that have been spreading recently through Southeast Asia, such as terrorism and separatism. Russia should anticipate an influx of refugees from the Korean peninsula, particularly if North Korea becomes more politically unstable. The article discusses environmental problems that can enter Russia from the Asia-Pacific Region, including Chinese water and air pollution. The author is concerned by the small size of Russia's Far East Military District, believing that it currently fails to secure the border with China and North Korea. K. Cargill
