Brazil's humid coastal zone was developed since the beginning with the colonial period. As a consequence, the frontier settlements advanced into the interior during the XVII century. Due to limited natural resources, the semi-arid interior zone was not attractive to the settlers initially, but was gradually developed by cattle grazing.
