The industrialized capitalist nations are characterized by a tendency to reduce the time workers normally spend at their place of paid employment. Karl Marx argued that this would be an inevitable consequence of the greater fatigue workers experienced because of capitalism's corresponding tendency to condense the amount of labor demanded of the employee per unit of time. The empirical evidence for Marx's claims accumulated over the last century is qualitatively assessed, & it is concluded that his basic hypotheses have been validated by the evidence. Worktime has greatly intensified over this period, which has been a primary factor underpinning the long-term worktime trend. 1 Table, 2 Figures. AA

Drawing upon a wide range of historical sources, Chris Nyland argues that the Taylorist system of work organisation has been too hastily dismissed by Marxist and other commentators from the left. The author thus suggests that socialists should re-evaluate the potentialities of scientific management, and hat the techniques of planning and systematic work scheduling for the benefit of the working class.
