Problems arising from alcohol consumption in the Aboriginal fringe camps and settlements of Central Australia have commanded medical and other professional attention for several decades. To date a real breakthrough in combating this problem has not been forthcoming. This paper suggests that the point of view of Western professionals in this field, absorbed as they seemingly are in the concept of alcoholism as individual pathology, obscures the real issues and precludes the possibility of finding lasting solutions. A move form the disease concept of alcoholism to a view of social dependence is suggested, and some implications of this for those involved in the delivery of treatment services are discussed.

A large majority of organizations are very small entities (VSEs) — enterprise, government, or not-for- pro t organizations; departments; or projects with up to 25 people who develop systems with hardware and software components and/or soft- ware products. Their products are sold to their customers directly or are integrated into those developed by larger organizations, possibly distributed to thousands of users worldwide, as illustrated in Figure 1.

PurposeThis paper reports on the results of an investigation into how the software development process is initially established within software product start‐ups.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs a grounded theory approach to characterize the experiences of small software organizations in developing processes to support their software development activity. Using the indigenous Irish software product industry as a test‐bed, the authors' examine how software development processes are established in software product start‐ups and the major factors that influence the make up of these processes.FindingsThe results show that the previous experience of the person tasked with managing the development work is the prime influencer on the process a company initially uses. Other influencers include the market sector in which the company is operating, the style of management used and the size and scale of the company operations.Originality/valueThe model has particular implications for start‐up software product organisations that wish to successfully manage their product development from an early stage.

Very Small Entities (VSEs) developing systems or software are very important to the military since the components they develop are often integrated into products made by larger organizations. Failure to deliver a quality product on time and within budget may threaten both customers and suppliers. One way to mitigate these risks is to put in place proven engineering practices. ISO has ap- proved recently the publication of standards and technical reports, known as ISO/ IEC 29110, to address the needs of VSEs.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between social perfectionism, overgeneral autobiographical memory recall, and psychological distress (hopelessness, depression/anxiety, and suicidal ideation) in a sample of parasuicide patients. Forty patients who had been admitted to a Scottish hospital following an episode of deliberate self-harm participated in the study. The participants completed the autobiographical memory task and a battery of self-report measures (multidimensional perfectionism, hopelessness, depression/anxiety, and suicidal ideation). The results showed that repetitive self-harmers were more overgeneral in their recall of positive autobiographical memories than were first-time self-harmers. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that socially prescribed perfectionism interacted with overgeneral recall of both positive and negative memories to predict suicidal ideation/depression. The findings are discussed in relation to previous research.
