In: Tla-Melaua. Revista de Ciencias Sociales, Band 7, Heft 32
ISSN: 2594-0716

Mexican Intellectuals and Policy Alteration (2000-2004)
In: The review of policy research: RPR ; the politics and policy of science and technology ; journal of the Science, Technology, and Environmental Politics Section of the American Political Science Association, Band 22, Heft 1, S. 17-26

The political & intellectual landscape of Mexico has been changed by two dramatic events: a new democratic experience, with the triumph of Vicente Fox in the presidential elections of the year 2000; & the relevant role that intellectuals are playing in public opinion. Soon, the democratic experience turned from illusion to deception, basically because Mexican political culture still is authoritarian, & this is something Mexican intellectuals could not accept. Their critics point out that democracy in Mexico is as new as it is weak, & Fox's government has been attacked in the media as no other president in recent history. 24 References. Is Mexico a North American or Latin American Country? An Analysis of Public Opinion
In: Latin American policy: LAP ; a journal of politics & governance in a changing region, Band 9, Heft 1, S. 113-138
ISSN: 2041-7373
This article presents the results of opinion polls conducted in Mexico since 2004, and of the Critical Discourse Analysis conducted on the most‐representative opinion articles of Mexican public intellectuals since 2000. The central argument is that the Mexican public accepts tacitly that the country can be a nation of multiple belongings, that is, North American and Latin American at the same time, and there is no need to choose one region over the other. Still, among intellectuals and public‐opinion leaders, there is a debate on whether Mexico should invest its foreign‐policy resources in North America or Latin America, and the costs and benefits of each option are evaluated.
Cosmopilatism, natioalism and the rigth of self-determination in the contemporary international sistem ; El ideal cosmopolita, el nacionalismo y el derecho a la autodeterminación de los pueblos en el sistema internacional contemporáneo
The article offers a review of the cosmopolitan perspective that reflects upon nationalism and the right of self-determination of the peoples in the Twenty First Century. The main argumentstresses that even though sovereignist claims won't disappear, the international community seeks to develop new conditions so as to frame this phenomenon within democratic mechanisms defending human rights. Therefore, if new local people appeal for their independence, they shall do it under the ideal human-centric and cosmopolitan framework.
