Drawing on interviews conducted with 400+ rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust, 164 nonrescuers, & 150 survivors, the rescuer's altruism is described as involving two socialization experiences: the first refers to the development of caring obligation in interpersonal attachments, & the second to inclusive obligation toward people of a different religion, nationality, & ethnicity. Three factors that encourage altruism & peace are suggested: (1) solid family relationships that promote interpersonal closeness, responsibility, & caring for others; (2) cultivation of generalized empathy accompanied by deliberate focus on diverse cultures as empathic subjects; & (3) intervention techniques directed to promote the particular sense of connectedness pertinent to various cultural groups.
