this paper explores client satisfaction with abortion care, looking at overall satisfaction and satisfaction with hygiene, comfort and courtesy. the analysis aimed to determine whether client satisfaction was related to the characteristics of the client, in order to guide quality improvement efforts. the analysis is a secondary analysis of data collected in a survey of 489 abortion clients who attended a limited number of hospitals in three cities in russia. the data were analysed using logistic regression. client characteristics, in general, did not affect overall satisfaction though there were significant differences in overall satisfaction for unmarried versus married women (or=0·29, ci=0·13, 0·63). similarly, most characteristics of the abortion visit were not related to client satisfaction, although women who were awake for the procedure were less likely to be satisfied (or=0·37, ci=0·16, 0·89). information provided to abortion clients about self-care was the most important predictor of overall satisfaction for abortion clients (or=3·55, ci=1·64, 7·69). this suggests that improving the information provided to clients, through training providers and other staff, is important in these settings.

Reliable measures of induced abortion remain elusive, especially when the public perception is that the procedure is immoral or improper. This study draws on interviews using a modified preceding birth technique (PBT) with women attending antenatal and maternity clinics in Accra to compare rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes (stillbirths, miscarriages, and induced abortions) with rates from a household maternity history and the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. The reports from the antenatal clinics produced some of the highest rates for adverse outcomes of pregnancy. In light of the generally high coverage of antenatal services found even in developing countries, the method based on the PBT holds promise for the improvement of reports of miscarriage and abortion worldwide.

This report synthesizes data from surveillance, behavioral surveys and published and unpublished research to better understand emerging patterns and trends in the HIV epidemic in Bangladesh. Taking stock of 20 years of experience with HIV in Bangladesh, this report summarizes what is known about the coverage and impact of HIV prevention services, including knowledge on risk and protective behaviors. The report is divided into nine chapters. Chapter one provides a brief introduction and an overview of the methodology used for this exercise. Chapter two discusses the risks and vulnerabilities of the high risk groups including female sex workers, injecting drug users, male who have sex with male, hijra and overlapping populations, while chapter three discusses the trend of the infection amongst partners of high risk groups. Bangladesh continues to report low condom use, which is analyzed and discussed in chapter four. Structural factors including macro level and intermediate level factors that affect HIV interventions in Bangladesh are addressed in chapter five. The national HIV response is discussed in chapter six. The report concludes with a discussion of the main findings, with recommendations for the future in chapter seven, and chapter eight and nine are annexes and references.
