The Islamic State in the Post-Modern World is a study of the political development of Pakistan. This study consists of three parts. The first addresses the concept of the 'state' as it has evolved historically, the second section focuses on the creation of Pakistan as an experiment in bridging the gulf between the demands of the modern state and the philosophical-spiritual attraction of the Islamic model, and the third part considers international issues from the beginning of the 21st century especially the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Consumer-Run Mental Health Framework for Recovery Louis D. Brown Conceived of as an empowering alternative to inpatient treatment and traditional community programs, mental health consumer-run organizations--CROs--offer consumers a hands-on stake in their own recovery. A growing evidence base suggests that CROs are a particularly effective form of self-help, with randomized trials demonstrating CRO participants experience improvements in personal empowerment, social integration, and well-being. Consumer-Run Mental Health explains their methods and analyzes their efficacy. ¡A robust theoretical framework synthesizes diverse perspectives to illuminate behavioral processes that contribute to recovery and the dynamics of CROs in creating environments that promote recovery. Data from the author's studies of CRO participation highlight consumer perceptions of the benefits of their involvement. An in-depth ethnographic study examines participant{u2019}s lives inside and outside the organization. And in a set of remarkable narratives, consumers describe dealing with both mental illness and the tasks of running a non-profit organization, for a fuller understanding of the impact of CRO participation on their lives. ¡By emphasizing consumer roles within the organization, the book breaks down the mental health CRO experience into these vital topics: ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Person-environment interaction within CROs. ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Developing empowering and socially supportive roles ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Resource exchange, skill development, and identity transformation ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Life history narratives: the lived experience of CRO participation. ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡How organizations influence role development. ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The impact of role development on recovery. ·¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Implications for practice. Opening up about rarely-addressed concepts of self-help, Consumer-Run Mental Health is a unique reference for researchers who study peer-run organizations as well as practitioners in community mental health settings who are involved in collaborating with or¡ supporting CROs
Building on earlier patient-empowerment movements, consumer- and advocate-driven mental health self-help (MHSH) initiatives currently outnumber traditional mental health organizations. At the same time, this apparent success raises significant questions about their short-term efficacy and their value to lasting recovery. Mental Health Self-Help assembles the state of the evidence on the effectiveness of MHSH, beginning with the individual and larger social factors behind the expansion of consumer-directed services. Clearly organized and accessibly written, the book traces the development and evolution of MHSH as both alternative and adjunct to traditional mental health structures, offers research-based perspectives on the various forms of MHSH, and identifies potential areas for consumer initiatives to work with-and help improve-mental health systems. Contributors weigh strengths and limitations, raise research and methodology questions, and discuss funding and training issues to give readers a deeper understanding of the field and an informed look at its future impact on mental health treatment. Individual chapters cover the spectrum of contemporary self-help initiatives in mental health, including: . Online mutual aid groups. . Consumer-run drop-in centers. . Family and caregiver groups. . Certified peer support specialists. . Consumer advocacy initiatives. . Technical assistance organizations. . Professional/self-help collaborations. Mental Health Self-Help is a bedrock guide to an increasingly influential aspect of the mental health landscape. Researchers studying these initiatives from a variety of fields including community and clinical psychology, and public health-as well as clinicians, counselors, social workers, case managers, and policymakers-will find it an indispensable reference. A former counselor at the US embassy in Moscow offers a first-hand account of the 1993 battle between Boris Yeltsin & the Russian parliament. Yeltsin issued a decree disbanding Parliament on 21 Sept, claiming it was leading Russia to collapse. On 3 Oct, thousands of Supreme Soviet supporters attacked police units & seized control of the White House & several other buildings located near the US embassy. Supreme Soviet supporters were mostly old-style communists or radical Russian nationalists & the crisis represented a civil war between the first generation of postcommunist rulers. Conflicts over Yeltsin's political & economic reforms are described, along with rumors of coups/counter-coups; the US embassy's role in the crisis; the Supreme Soviet's vote to remove Yeltsin from office & install an acting president; the violence that followed; & Yeltsin's decision to use tanks to end the crisis. With 147 deaths, the 3-4 Oct incident was the worst outbreak of civil violence in Moscow since the Russian Revolution. The negative impact on Yeltsin's popularity is discussed. 1 Map; 2 Photographs.
