In an election for the Eduskunta, Finland's Parliament, voters are asked to select a particular candidate from a party list. This article analyzes the intra-party choice of candidates on the occasion of Finland's 1999 election. It seeks to provide quantitative estimates of intra-party competition by using three measurements: position effect, the Gini index of inequality, & intra-partisan defeats. The study shows that whether a candidate's name comes first, middle or last on a party list has an effect on voting choice in Finland. It also suggests that Finnish voters tend to disperse their preferences widely among a party's candidates, with the result that a large proportion of incumbents are defeated by newcomer candidates. 5 Tables, 28 References. The article examines whether a high position in party lists increases the likelihood of receiving personal votes in two states that use a preference voting system: Belgium & the Netherlands. Both countries also use the same ballot structure: the ballot groups candidates by party, within each group candidates are ranked according to their party preferences. The study of the 1998 parliamentary election in the Netherlands shows that most voters cast their votes for candidates placed first on party lists. In the beige election of 1999, in contrast, no significant relationship between a candidate's ballot position & number of votes was found. In spite of these differences in voting behavior, the result of both elections was that no candidate was elected out of list order. 4 Tables, 15 References. Adapted from the source document.

This article examines the relationship between ballot position & electoral success in 3 states that use the Single Transferable Vote (STV): Ireland, Malta, & Australia. STV systems provide an excellent laboratory to test ballot position effects because voters are allowed to choose among a party's candidates under different ballot formats. The analysis shows that in Irish & Australian elections candidates placed first on the ballot receive more votes than those listed in subsequent positions. In Maltese elections, in contrast, no position effect has been found. 7 Tables, 17 References. Adapted from the source document.
; This article analyses party loyalties in the Andalusian regional elections of 2004 and 2008. Our results show that party identifi cation is the main factor explaining the vote in Andalusia, particularly in the case of the socialist vote. In this regard, party loyalties among the Andalusian electorate not only induce voters to vote for a particular party, but also act as a perceptual screen. Consequently, party loyalties reduce political differences with the reference group and increase ideological differences with other political groups.

This article analyzes the Spanish use of the limited vote. The limited vote is partially used in Spain for the election of 197 out of 239 senators. In Spanish Senate elections, the voter has the possibility to choose among a party's candidates & is also allowed to vote for candidates of more than one party. The study of the year 2000 Senate election shows that most Spanish voters cast their votes for candidates of the same political party. However, when voters choose among a party's candidates, they show preference for candidates placed first on party columns. The analysis of party nomination strategies suggests that the alphabetical rank ordering of candidates on the ballot has been manipulated by parties to favor incumbent candidates by placing their names first on the list. 5 Tables, 25 References. Research on preference voting systems seems to indicate that where voters are allowed to choose among a party's candidates, the order in which candidates are listed on the ballot has an effect upon the number of nominative votes they receive. This article analyses the effect of ballot position on the electoral success of individual candidates under the single transferable vote (STV). Ireland & Malta use the STV for parliamentary elections, though they differ in the layout of their ballots. The study of the 2002 Irish election & the 2003 Maltese election shows that the number of preference votes received by candidates of the same party is unrelated to their alphabetical placement on the ballot. The analysis suggests that preference voting systems are not particularly vulnerable to position effects when there is a high degree of intra-party competition. 5 Tables, 25 References. This paper incorporates the contextual perspective in the analysis of electoral behavior. Whilst focusing on the partisan orientation of the vote, this paper takes up one of the classic questions of contextual electoral literature: the influence of the community's political environment on voting behavior of its inhabitants. We examine the influence of the political composition of Andalusian municipalities on the socialist vote in the 2011 local election. Our analysis shows that the local political atmosphere had a minimal but significant effect on the voting of its residents in the local elections. Accordingly, the political environment in Andalusian localities, pushed voters, whose immediate surroundings did not provide politically relevant information or were independent, to follow the local socialist majority. Urbanization weakens this local effect on the socialist vote. The other main finding of our research is the importance of informal social interaction in explaining the socialist vote, through conversations taking place in the environment immediate to the individual.

This piece of work presents a series of findings resulting from an ongoing research on the socio-political integration of Muslim immigrants in Spain. Provisional findings stipulate the emergence of enhanced identities and, possibly, the move towards the 'communitarian closure' of some immigrants' communities. However, a favourable attitude for political participation, mostly in terms of electoral turnout, is highlighted, leading to a successful process of socio-political integration.

This article takes over, from an empirical perspective, one of the classic concerns of normative theories of democracy: political community size and citizen participation. Although it focuses on voter turnout, this paper makes a simple question: why and how the political body size can influence the political behaviour of its residents. For this purpose, we examine, from an aggregate approach, the relationship between "size" and turnout in different types of elections in Andalusia, in the period 1999-2011. Our ecological analysis of participation, by using multi-regression techniques, shows that population size is the main "civic" characteristic of localities. However, other characteristics of local contexts, such as income and subsidized agrarian population, are positively related to participation. Our results suggest that individual theories of voting behaviour should also take into account the contextual factor when offering their conclusions. Adapted from the source document.

This paper examines the impact of electoral systems on the success of regionalist parties in national elections held in 22 Western European regions from 1980 to 2004. Our study covers 30 regionalist parties, only those usually achieving more than one percent of the regional vote in the period under observation. Electoral systems are defined in terms of three main components: ballot structure, constituency magnitude & electoral formula. In particular, we focus on the effects of these elements on multipartism & on support for regionalist parties. Electoral results are, in turn, analyzed at constituency level. The analysis of 1622 district election results suggests two main conclusions: proportional systems clearly encourage multipartism but there is no evidence that they foster support for regionalist parties.
