Maciej Zakrzewski's latest book on the political thought of the "Bunt Młodych" ("Young Rebellion") and "Polityka" ("Politics") circles is an important event in the Polish historiography of recent history. It concerns an ideological group, putting forward bold and original concepts of the political system, as well as those concerning foreign and minority policy. Zakrzewski presents all these issues in a competent and at the same time thought-provoking manner.
The article analyses the genesis of the Catholic Social Parliamentary Club [Klub Poselski Katolicko-Społeczny] in the Legislative Sejm of the Republic of Poland in the years 1947–1952, the stages of its activity and the political concepts of its deputies. It consisted of three parliamentarians: Jan Frankowski, Aleksander Bocheński and Witold Bieńkowski. They were initially guided by the tactics of constructive opposition and the intention to create a broader political milieu of Polish Catholics. Initially, the deputies acted in a courageous and factual manner, but over time, in the face of internal disputes and political processes in the country, their activity became increasingly conformist and focused on defending, usually ineffectively, certain rights of Catholics.
The article presents the history of the Catholic weekly "Ład" and the Christian Democrat circles gathered around it in 1988–1993. It presents the main ideological disputes of the Christian Democrats at the time of the political transformation, organizational transformations and their attitude to events on the political scene. The aim of the article is also to indicate the reasons for the defeat of the traditional Christian Democratic parties, which were unable to maintain their position on the political scene, as did the weekly "Ład". The text argues that this was due both to objective reasons, which made it impossible for the parties referring to the interwar traditions to gain a strong position, and to the fragmentation of the Christian Democratic movement and the Polish right in general, as well as to the negative public perception of the Solidarity governments. "Ład" and the Christian Democrats proposed interesting political and economic solutions, but they were unable to take a clear position in the political conflict. Many of their ideas did not arouse public interest, while those that had the potential to become famous were "intercepted" by other parties. Therefore, the magazine and its milieu remained an interesting element of the history of Polish political thought, but due to the fact that the Polish political scene was determined by other issues they did not manage to break through with their moderate program.

One of the most important elements of the political thought of the Polish Catholic activist, Jan Frankowski, was a reflection on the social and economic tasks of Catholicism in the modern world. However, it depended on the volatile political conditions. In the Second Polish Republic, Frankowski, cooperating with the "young conservatives" movement, called for the renewal of the Church and increase in the activity of the laity. They were to replace, in respect of many issues, the listless clergy, seeking and finding the answer to the question regarding the new Catholic thought in the era of atheist totalitarianisms. He, himself, believed that it cannot be found in slogans: corporatism and solidarity, but it should be sought in the creative interpretation of the papal encyclicals in accordance with the "third way" and personalism. However, his thought was rather "against" certain elements than "in support" of other, he tried to pave the way for new ideas.During the Second World War, Frankowski was cooperating with "Unia" Catholic group, but as early as in 1944, he commenced cooperation with communist authorities. Despite the fact that he distanced himself from many aspects of operation of "Dziś i Jutro" group and "PAX" Association, he cooperated with them, trying to, unsuccessfully, adjust the "third way" to the new conditions. In 1956, he left "PAX". However, he opposed the concept of "nonpartisan democratic left", causing the split of "Za i Przeciw" weekly group and creating the Christian Social Association. It was, in general, a group with no ideology, based on the cooperation with authorities and the guarantee of basic rights of Church in Poland. Not only did Frankowski not succeed as a creator of great concepts, but he also did not achieved much as a politician with limited ambitions. In 1968, he lost the position of the chairperson of the Christian Social Association. He died 8 years later as an almost completely forgotten activist. This situation resulted also from his decision to discontinue bold ideological reflections. W okresie międzywojennym Frankowski, związany z ruchem "młodokonserwatystów" wzywał do odnowy Kościoła i zwiększania w nim roli świeckich, którzy powinni zastąpić w wielu sprawach gnuśny kler, szukając nowych dróg katolicyzmu w dobie ateistycznych totalitaryzmów.
Political realism is not easy to define. The analysis of specific cases may help. In this text, I wonder whether Aleksander Bocheński was a political realist. His journalism has undergone a significant evolution. He was a supporter of the Polish "power state" before 1939, he wanted to collaborate with the nazi Germans during the war years, and after the war he was an apologist for People's Poland and a critic of the Third Polish Republic. My considerations prove, that Bocheński was looking for political realism in his life and oeuvre, not always, however, entering this trend of reflection on politics.
The History of Stupidity in Poland. The historiographic pamphlets [Dzieje głupoty w Polsce. Pamflety dziejopisarskie] was the most important publication by Aleksander Bocheński. The book was also one of the most representative reflections on the post-war trend of political realism in Poland. The journalistic reaction to the first edition of the book in the forties of the 20th century proved that the theses included in it were highly unpopular. The author's criticism of insurrection trends in Polish politics met with opposition from Marxists as well as non-party intellectuals, both at home and abroad. Although motives of Bocheński's concepts were usually understood, they were rejected as they served communists, were contrary to Marxist doctrine or had no moral foundations. Those opinions constitute an important contribution to the views of Polish intelligentsia on political realism at the beginnings of the Polish People's Republic.
