Over the past '2 decades considerable convergence has developed in theories of cognitive interaction, as seen in the work of those who have made signal contributions to this field: Fritz Heider (balance & imbalance), Theodore Newcomb (symmetry), Leon Festinger (dissonance & consonance), & C. E. Osgood & P. H. Tannenbaum (congruity). These theories are compared with respect to certain emergent general principles: (a) 'cognitive modification results from the psychol'al stress produced by cognitive inconsistencies,' (b) if cognitive elements are to interact, they must be brought into some relation with one another,' (c) magnitude of stress toward modification increases with the degree of cognitive inconsistency;' & (d) 'the dynamics of cognitive interactions are such that modifications under stress always reduce total cognitive inconsistency.' Evidence is cited for the operation of these principles in areas of attitude change, decision, information seeking, interpersonal perception, communication & group cohesiveness, & interaction & semantic meanings. It is further hyp'ed that these laws also operate at the level of groups & of societies. C. M. Coughenour.
