Background: This article examines the intersection of two global trends, super-diversity and globalized aging, in the context of urban communities. Super-diversity refers to the impact of changing immigration patterns on social, health, and economic systems. Interdisciplinary by definition, gerontological social work practice bridges macro, mezzo, and micro modalities, as well as professional and disciplinary false divides.Objectives: The authors aim to highlight how urban gerontology practice can benefit from reaching across borders and boundaries. Goals include identifying best practices of care that can serve as models in a range of environments.Methods: The authors used a qualitative case study approach. Data collection consisted of individual interviews and focus groups.Findings: Findings suggest the ongoing relevance of ecological theory in the context of identifying best practices in social work gerontology.Discussion: Through the lens of super-diversity and globalized aging, the authors examine processes and impacts at the intersection of migration, advanced age, and care systems in the urban context. Findings indicate the need to further de-colonize aging care.

In response to the need for improved access to dementia services for minority ethnic communities, the Alzheimer's Society piloted, in 2014, the Information Programme for South Asian Families (IPSAF), an adapted version of its existing course for carers. It delivered this in partnership with local black and minority ethnic community and faith organisations, a new approach for the Alzheimer's Society. In most cases, the partnerships formed were strong and effective, and have given rise to ongoing plans for joint working that bring benefits to both the local organisations and the Alzheimer's Society. However, the current realities of UK voluntary and community sector dynamics raise questions of ownership and issues around how to establish genuine partnerships. In this article, we reflect on what the IPSAF experience indicates about the potential for equitable partnerships between small and large organisations, and draw out lessons for building effective, mutually beneficial relationships.

It is estimated that 820,000 people in the UK have dementia. Dementia costs the UK 17 billion a year and in the next 30 years this will treble to over »50 billion a year. There is a need to raise competence of staff delivering care to people living with dementia across health, social and voluntary sector provision. Effective education and training will build capacity and improve staff knowledge. However, at present not enough is known about the experiences of staff involved in gaining the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to support provision of high quality care for people with dementia. This study was conducted within a large National Health Service Trust in the UK serving an urban, ethnically mixed population, in collaboration with a local university. The trust responded to government policy by seeking to identify staff training needs.

This volume and its companion, The new dynamics of ageing volume 1, provide comprehensive multi-disciplinary overviews of the very latest research on ageing.
