O.; Benítez, N.; Cristóbal-Hornillos, D.; Ederoclite, A.; Mendes de Oliveira, C.; Civera, T.; Muniesa, D.; Taylor, K.; Tempel, E.; J-PAS Collaboration. ; The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will soon start imaging thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with its unique set of 56 filters (spectral resolution of R - 60). Before the arrival of the final instrument, we observed 1 deg2 on the AEGIS field with an interim camera with all the J-PAS filters. Taking advantage of these data, dubbed miniJPAS, we aim at proving the scientific potential of the J-PAS to derive the stellar population properties of galaxies via fitting codes for spectral energy distributions (SEDs), with the ultimate goal of performing galaxy evolution studies across cosmic time. One parametric (BaySeAGal) and three non-parametric (MUFFIT, AlStar, and TGASPEX) SED-fitting codes are used to constrain the stellar mass, age, metallicity, extinction, and rest-frame and dust-corrected (u-r) colours of a complete flux-limited sample (rSDSS - 22.5 AB) of miniJPAS galaxies that extends up to z = 1. We generally find consistent results on the galaxy properties derived from the different codes, independently of the galaxy spectral type or redshift; this is remarkable considering that 25% of the J-spectra have signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) -3. For galaxies with S=N - 10, we estimate that the J-PAS photometric system will allow us to derive the stellar population properties of rest-frame (u - r) colour, stellar mass, extinction, and mass-weighted age with a precision of 0:04 - 0:02 mag, 0:07 - 0:03 dex, 0:2 - 0:09 mag, and 0:16 - 0:07 dex, respectively. This precision is equivalent to that obtained with spectroscopic surveys of similar S/N. By using the dust-corrected (u - r) colour mass diagram, a powerful proxy for characterizing galaxy populations, we find: (i) that the fraction of red and blue galaxies evolves with cosmic time, with red galaxies being -38% and -18% of the whole population at z = 0:1 and z = 0:5, respectively, and (ii) consistent results between codes for the average intrinsic (u-r) colour, stellar mass, age, and stellar metallicity of blue and red galaxies and their evolution up to z = 1. At all redshifts, the more massive galaxies belong to the red sequence, and these galaxies are typically older and more metal-rich than their counterparts in the blue cloud. Our results confirm that with J-PAS data we will be able to analyse large samples of galaxies up to z - 1, with galaxy stellar masses above log(M?=M-) - 8:9, 9.5, and 9.9 at z = 0:3, 0.5, and 0.7, respectively. The star formation history of a complete sub-sample of galaxies selected at z - 0:1 with log(M=M-) > 8:3 constrains the cosmic evolution of the star formation rate density up to z - 3, in good agreement with results from cosmological surveys. © ESO 2021. ; Acknowledgements. V. Wild et al. ; We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the Mice, a major merger between two massive (≥ 1011 M ·) gas-rich spirals NGC 4676A and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence. The spectra provide stellar and gas kinematics, ionised gas properties, and stellar population diagnostics, over the full optical extent of both galaxies with ∼1.6 kpc spatial resolution. The Mice galaxies provide a perfect case study that highlights the importance of IFS data for improving our understanding of local galaxies. The impact of first passage on the kinematics of the stars and gas has been significant, with strong bars most likely induced in both galaxies. The barred spiral NGC 4676B exhibits a strong twist in both its stellar and ionised gas disk. The edge-on disk galaxy NGC 4676A appears to be bulge free, with a strong bar causing its >boxy> light profile. On the other hand, the impact of the merger on the stellar populations has been minimal thus far. By combining the IFS data with archival multiwavelength observations we show that star formation induced by the recent close passage has not contributed significantly to the total star formation rate or stellar mass of the galaxies. Both galaxies show bicones of high ionisation gas extending along their minor axes. In NGC 4676A the high gas velocity dispersion and Seyfert-like line ratios at large scaleheight indicate a powerful outflow. Fast shocks (vs ∼ 350 km s-1) extend to ∼6.6 kpc above the disk plane. The measured ram pressure (P/k = 4.8 × 106 K cm-3) and mass outflow rate (∼8-20 M· yr-1) are similar to superwinds from local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, although NGC 4676A only has a moderate infrared luminosity of 3 × 1010 L·. Energy beyond what is provided by the mechanical energy of the starburst appears to be required to drive the outflow. Finally, we compare the observations to mock kinematic and stellar population maps extracted from a hydrodynamical merger simulation. The models show little enhancement in star formation during and following first passage, in agreement with the observations. M.; Santos da Costa, S.; Telles, E. ; The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will scan thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with a unique set of 56 filters using the dedicated 2:55m Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST) at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Prior to the installation of the main camera (4:2 deg2 field-of-view with 1.2 Gpixels), the JST was equipped with the JPAS-Pathfinder, a one CCD camera with a 0:3 deg2 field-of-view and plate scale of 0.23 arcsec pixel?1. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, the JPAS-Pathfinder camera was used to perform miniJPAS, a _1 deg2 survey of the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip). The field was observed with the 56 J-PAS filters, which include 54 narrow band (FWHM _ 145 ) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the u; g; r; i SDSS broad band filters. In this miniJPAS survey overview paper, we present the miniJPAS data set (images and catalogs), as we highlight key aspects and applications of these unique spectro-photometric data and describe how to access the public data products. The data parameters reach depths of magAB ' 22?23:5 in the 54 narrow band filters and up to 24 in the broader filters (5_ in a 300 aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalog contains more than 64 000 sources detected in the r band and with matched photometry in all other bands. This catalog is 99% complete at r = 23:6 (r = 22:7) mag for point-like (extended) sources. We show that our photometric redshifts have an accuracy better than 1% for all sources up to r = 22:5, and a precision of _0:3% for a subset consisting of about half of the sample. On this basis, we outline several scientific applications of our data, including the study of spatially-resolved stellar populations of nearby galaxies, the analysis of the large scale structure up to z _ 0:9, and the detection of large numbers of clusters and groups. Sub-percent redshift precision can also be reached for quasars, allowing for the study of the large-scale structure to be pushed to z 2. The miniJPAS survey demonstrates the capability of the J-PAS filter system to accurately characterize a broad variety of sources and paves the way for the upcoming arrival of J-PAS, which will multiply this data by three orders of magnitude. © 2021 EDP Sciences. We measured the gas abundance profiles in a sample of 122 face-on spiral galaxies observed by the CALIFA survey and included all spaxels whose line emission was consistent with star formation. This type of analysis allowed us to improve the statistics with respect to previous studies, and to properly estimate the oxygen distribution across the entire disc to a distance of up to 3-4 disc effective radii (r). We confirm the results obtained from classical H ii region analysis. In addition to the general negative gradient, an outer flattening can be observed in the oxygen abundance radial profile. An inner drop is also found in some cases. There is a common abundance gradient between 0.5 and 2.0 r of α =-0.075 dex/r with a scatter of σ = 0.016 dex/r when normalising the distances to the disc effective radius. By performing a set of Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, we determined that this slope is independent of other galaxy properties, such as morphology, absolute magnitude, and the presence or absence of bars. In particular, barred galaxies do not seem to display shallower gradients, as predicted by numerical simulations. Interestingly, we find that most of thegalaxies in the sample with reliable oxygen abundance values beyond ~2 effective radii (57 galaxies) present a flattening of the abundance gradient in these outer regions. This flattening is not associated with any morphological feature, which suggests that it is a common property of disc galaxies. In the years to come, the Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will observe 8000 deg2 of the northern sky with 56 photometric bands. J-PAS is ideal for the detection of nebular emission objects. This paper presents a new method based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) that is aimed at measuring and detecting emission lines in galaxies up to zRlarr2 =Rlarr2 0.35. These lines are essential diagnostics for understanding the evolution of galaxies through cosmic time. We trained and tested ANNs with synthetic J-PAS photometry from CALIFA, MaNGA, and SDSS spectra. To this aim, we carried out two tasks. First, we clustered galaxies in two groups according to the values of the equivalent width (EW) of Hα, Hβ, [N II], and [O III] lines measured in the spectra. Then we trained an ANN to assign a group to each galaxy. We were able to classify them with the uncertainties typical of the photometric redshift measurable in J-PAS. Second, we utilized another ANN to determine the values of those EWs. Subsequently, we obtained the [N II]/Hα, [O III]/Hβ, and O 3N 2 ratios, recovering the BPT diagram ([O III]/Hβ versus [N II]/Hα). We studied the performance of the ANN in two training samples: one is only composed of synthetic J-PAS photo-spectra (J-spectra) from MaNGA and CALIFA (CALMa set) and the other one is composed of SDSS galaxies. We were able to fully reproduce the main sequence of star-forming galaxies from the determination of the EWs. With the CALMa training set, we reached a precision of 0.092 and 0.078 dex for the [N II]/Hα and [O III]/Hβ ratios in the SDSS testing sample. Nevertheless, we find an underestimation of those ratios at high values in galaxies hosting an active galactic nuclei. We also show the importance of the dataset used for both training and testing the model. Such ANNs are extremely useful for overcoming the limitations previously expected concerning the detection and measurements of the emission lines in such surveys as J-PAS. Furthermore, we show the capability of the method to measure a EW of 10 Å in Hα, Hβ, [N II] and [O III] lines with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 5, 1.5, 3.5, and 10, respectively, in the photometry. Finally, we compare the properties of emission lines in galaxies observed with miniJPAS and SDSS. We present the apparent stellar angular momentum over the optical extent of 300 galaxies across the Hubble sequence using integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data from the CALIFA survey. Adopting the same λ parameter previously used to distinguish between slow and fast rotating early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies, we show that spiral galaxies are almost all fast rotators, as expected. Given the extent of our data, we provide relations for λ measured in different apertures (e.g. fractions of the effective radius: 0.5 R, R, 2 R), including conversions to long-slit 1D apertures. Our sample displays a wide range of λ values, consistent with previous IFS studies. The fastest rotators are dominated by relatively massive and highly star-forming Sb galaxies, which preferentially reside in the main star-forming sequence. These galaxies reach λ values of ∼0.85, and they are the largest galaxies at a given mass, while also displaying some of the strongest stellar population gradients. Compared to the population of S0 galaxies, our findings suggest that fading may not be the dominant mechanism transforming spirals into lenticulars. Interestingly, we find that λ decreases for late-type Sc and Sd spiral galaxies, with values that occasionally set them in the slow-rotator regime. While for some of them this can be explained by their irregular morphologies and/or face-on configurations, others are edge-on systems with no signs of significant dust obscuration. The latter are typically at the low-mass end, but this does not explain their location in the classical (V/σ, ϵ) and (λ, ϵ) diagrams. Our initial investigations, based on dynamical models, suggest that these are dynamically hot disks, probably influenced by the observed important fraction of dark matter within R © ESO 2018. ; Funding and financial support acknowledgements: J.
