The ecological consequences of Amazonia's National Integration Plan have been dealt with through a conservation program, but Indians' rights are not protected. Subjected to a legal system of tutelage, Indians must seek redress through the National Indian Foundation which pursues an assimilationist policy. Federal and state governments fight over Indian lands by establishing reserves of interdicted areas, and exploit their natural resources, sometimes under guise of promoting conservation projects, such as national parks or genetical reserves
