This longitudinal study examined the separate, relative, and combined contributions of demographic (i.e., gender and ethnicity), individual‐level (i.e., psychological well‐being), and contextual (i.e., relationships with parents and perceived school climate) factors on changes over time in perceived quality of general and closest same‐sex friendships among 114 Asian American, Black, and Latino adolescents from low‐income families. Multiple regression analyses indicated that the increase in reported levels of general friendship support from Time 1 to Time 2 (a 1‐year period) was greater for those who reported more positive perceptions of school climate at Time 1. The increase in general friendship support from Time 1 to Time 2 was also greater for those who reported lower support scores from mothers at Time 1. Findings suggest a compensatory model of relationships and draw attention to the importance of exploring the ecological context of adolescent friendships.

Dans la philosophie morale du xviii e siècle britannique, le sentiment de sympathie, soit notre capacité à sentir avec et pour quelqu'un d'autre, avait une place tout à fait centrale. Or, cette sympathie avait aussi son « autre » : l'indifférence, la stupidité, l'apathie, et toutes sortes d'insensibilités. Ces différentes formes de « manque de sentiment » n'avaient pas toutes la même teneur morale. Cet article montre, entre autres, comment des formes physiques d'insensibilités jugées dangereuses pour la cohésion du corps social furent mises à bon usage pour rendre des interventions chirurgicales indolores.

Healthcare and social services providers are deemed culturally competent when they offer culturally appropriate care to the populations they serve. While a review of the literature highlights the limited effectiveness of cultural competence training, its value remains largely unchallenged and it is institutionally mandated as a means of decreasing health disparities and improving quality of care. A plethora of trainings are designed to expose providers to different cultures and expand their understanding of the beliefs, values and behavior thus, achieving competence. Although this intention is commendable, training providers in becoming competent in various cultures presents the risk of stereotyping, stigmatizing, and othering patients and can foster implicit racist attitudes and behaviors. Further, by disregarding intersectionality, cultural competence trainings tend to undermine provider recognition that patients inhabit multiple social statuses that potentially shape their beliefs, values and behavior. To address these risks, we propose training providers in cultural humility, that is, an orientation to care that is based on self-reflexivity, appreciation of patients' lay expertise, openness to sharing power with patients, and to continue learning from one's patients. We also briefly discuss our own cultural humility training. Training providers in cultural humility and abandoning the term cultural competence is a long-awaited paradigm shift that must be advanced.

Historicizing both emotions and politics, this open access book argues that the historical work of emotion is most clearly understood in terms of the dynamics of institutionalization. This is shown in twelve case studies that focus on decisive moments in European and US history from 1800 until today. Each case study clarifies how emotions were central to people's political engagement and its effects. The sources range from parliamentary buildings and social movements, to images and speeches of presidents, from fascist cemeteries to the International Criminal Court. Both the timeframe and the geographical focus have been chosen to highlight the increasingly participatory character of nineteenth- and twentieth-century politics, which is inconceivable without the work of emotions.
