AbstractIntroductionLittle is known regarding the impact of dental treatment under sedation on distressed young children's oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL).AimTo evaluate the impact of dental treatment under sedation on the OHRQoL of children and their families.MethodsCaregivers of two‐to‐six‐year‐old children answered the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (B‐ECOHIS): (1) before treatment under sedation (T0), (2) two weeks (T1) and (3) 3 months after the completion of treatment (T2). A global transition judgment was included in the posttreatment evaluations to determine the perception of changes in OHRQoL after dental treatment. Bivariate analysis was performed. Changes in scores and effect sizes (ES) were calculated.ResultsReductions were found at both posttreatment evaluations in the total B‐ECOHIS scores (median [25th–75th percentile] at T0: 14 [9.8–21.7]; T1: 2.0 [0.0–5.1]; T2: 2.0 [0.0–6.7]); "child impact" section (T0: 8.8 [4.0–13.1]; T1: 0.0 [0.0–2.2]; T2: 0.0 [0.0–4.3]) and "family impact" section (T0: 6.0 [4.0–8.5]; T1: 0.0 [0.0–2.0]; T2: 0.0 [0.0–2.0]) (≤0.001; large ES). In 92.3% of cases at T1 and 88.3% at T2, caregivers reported that their child's oral health improved considerably.ConclusionDental treatment under sedation significantly improved the OHRQoL of the children and their families.

ABSTRACTThis study evaluated 209 Brazilian parents' acceptance of the use of restraint during dental care for their children with intellectual disabilities. Participants were interviewed end they also watched a video on physical restraint techniques, sedation, and general anesthesia. There was a statistically significant relationship for 22.9% of the parents. The odds ratio revealed that participants were more likely to accept physical restraints for their child when parents were over the age of 35 and from an underprivileged economic class and when the children had previously experienced physical restraints. Dental healthcare professionals should consider the individual needs of each patient and consult with the child's family if there is a need to use restraints.

AbstractIntroductionOral health affects the general health of people with Down syndrome (DS), with repercussions on their ability to chew and to communicate.ObjectiveTo evaluate the influence of sociodemographic characteristics and clinical indicators on the perceptions of parents/caregivers regarding the oral health of individuals with DS.MethodsParents/caregivers completed a questionnaire containing sociodemographic information and answered the 20 questions of the Brazilian version of the Oral Health Scale for People with DS. Intra‐oral clinical exam of children/adolescents was performed to assess dental caries, periodontal disease, and malocclusion. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and Poisson regression model analyses were carried out.ResultsIn this study, 55.1% of the parents/caregivers showed a positive perception regarding the oral health of their children/adolescents. Parents/caregivers of individuals between 4 and 9 years old (Prevalence Ratio (PR) = 1.13; Confidence Interval (CI), 1.04 – 1.23; p = 0.003) and parents/caregivers of those with definite malocclusion (PR = 1.14; CI, 1.00 – 1.31; p = 0.047) had a higher prevalence of reporting a more negative perception of their children's/adolescents' oral health.ConclusionDS individuals' age and the severity of malocclusion were indicators of a more negative perception of parents/caregivers regarding their sons'/daughters' oral health.

AbstractAimsTo assess the impact of oral conditions among children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) on the Oral Health‐related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) of their families in comparison with a group without DS.Methods and resultsFamilies of 144 children/adolescents with DS aged 4‐18 years were compared with families of individuals without DS. Dental caries experience (DMFT/dmft), clinical consequences of untreated dental caries (PUFA/pufa), gingival bleeding (GBI), visible plaque (VPI), and malocclusion were evaluated. Parents/caregivers answered the Family Impact Scale (FIS) and questionnaires on sociodemographic conditions and the health of children/adolescents. Data analysis included chi‐square test and Poisson regression. There was no difference between groups regarding the impact of the children's/adolescents' oral condition on their families' OHRQoL for all domains and the total FIS score (P > 0.05). A negative impact on the OHRQoL of families of children/adolescents with DS was determined by dental caries (PR = 3.95, CI = 2.09‐7.46), clinical consequences of untreated dental caries (PR = 1.83, CI = 1.18‐2.84), defined malocclusion (PR = 2.75, CI = 1.23‐6.13), and severe malocclusion (PR = 2.82, CI = 1.02‐7.74).ConclusionThere is no difference on the OHRQoL of families of children/adolescents with and without DS. Dental caries experience, clinical consequences of untreated dental caries, defined malocclusion, and severe malocclusion determined the negative impact on the OHRQoL of families of children/adolescents with DS.

AbstractAimTo compare oral health indicators of children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) with a group of children/adolescents without DS.Methods and ResultsThis cross‐sectional study included 144 individuals with DS, ages 4 to 18 years, matched for age and sex with a group of 144 individuals without DS, and their parents/caregivers. Parents/caregivers completed a questionnaire regarding sociodemographic information and habits related to their children's oral health. Clinical examination of the children/adolescents evaluated dental caries experience (DMFT/dmft), bleeding on periodontal probing, presence of visible plaque, clinical consequences of untreated dental caries (PUFA/pufa), and malocclusion (DAI). The chi‐square test, linear by linear test, and Mann‐Whitney test were used to compare the variables between the groups (p < .05). Children/adolescents without DS brushed their teeth more times per day (p < .001) and had a higher frequency of daily sugar intake (p < .001). The children/adolescents in the DS group had a greater presence of gingival bleeding (p < .001) and had a greater number of cases of "severe malocclusion" and "very severe malocclusion" (p = .001). No difference was found in the prevalence of dental caries between the two groups.ConclusionThe children/adolescents in the DS group had a greater presence of gingival bleeding during the clinical examination and had a greater need for orthodontic treatment.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to find out the children's profile identified as Sentinel Event in oral health by the Municipal Health Department of the city of Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: A quantitative, analytical, exploratory and documentary analysis study was developed in the city of Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, involving 545 children, age ranging from zero to six years old. Sentinel event data were collected through an electronic form created in the Unified Health System and filled out by the municipal oral health teams. Information systems of the city council were consulted. The variables studied were as follows: Health Vulnerability Index, race/color, age, sex, to be beneficiary of the Bolsa Família Program (a social program sponsored by the government), to be monitored by the Strategy of the Family Health Program, to reside in the Belo Horizonte Citizenship Program area, nature of the school and region of residence. Statistical analysis was performed in the SPSS software, 20th version. Results: The results showed that the majority of children live in areas of medium and high social risk, they are five to six years old, male, dark-skinned, do not benefit from the Bolsa Família program, are not under the Strategy of the Family Health Program, do not reside in the territory of the Belo Horizonte Citizenship Program, and study in institutions of the municipal education network. The sentinel event is present in the nine regions of Belo Horizonte, with a higher prevalence in the regions of Venda Nova, Northeast, West, East and Barreiro. Conclusion: The study demonstrates the crucial importance of comprehensive social policies in order to influence oral health.

AbstractBackgroundThe relevance of sense of coherence (SOC) is important to the wellbeing of parents, especially mothers of children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).ObjectiveDetermine whether the oral health status of children/adolescents with OI is associated with mother's SOC.Materials and methodA paired cross‐sectional study was conducted with 37 children/adolescents with OI, 37 without OI, and their respective mothers. The children/adolescents were between two and 19 years of age, mean age 7.2 years, being 47 male and 27 female. The mothers completed Antonovsky's SOC questionnaire (SOC‐13), and the oral status of the children/adolescents was investigated. The following clinical conditions were evaluated: dentinogenesis imperfecta, malocclusion, gingivitis, and dental caries experience.ResultsThe genetic condition of the children was significantly associated with mother's SOC (P < .001). Mothers of children with OI had lower SOC scores (mean: 35.6 [± 4.9]) than mothers of children without OI (mean: 38.5 [± 4.3]). In the group with OI, a low socioeconomic status was associated with lower mother's SOC scores (P = .004). In both groups, dental caries experience was associated with lower mother's SOC scores (P = .007). Most individuals with OI presented malocclusion (78.3%) and experience of dental caries (59.4%).ConclusionHaving a child with OI influenced the sense of coherence of the mothers. Socioeconomic status and dental caries experience in children and adolescents with OI were associated with mother's SOC.

AbstractAimThe aim of this systematic review and meta‐analysis was to evaluate the association between sense of coherence (SOC) and dental fear/dental anxiety.MethodsComputerized searches were performed in six databases. Gray literature and manual searches were also conducted. Study selection, risk of bias assessment, and meta‐analyses were performed. The results of meta‐analyses were reported in odds ratio (OR), mean difference (MD), and confidence interval (CI).ResultsAfter removing duplicates, 131 references were retrieved and the full texts of 12 were evaluated. Nine references met the eligibility criteria and were included. The results of meta‐analyses demonstrated that individuals with a weaker SOC had a score in the dental anxiety/dental fear scale 6.04 times higher than individuals with a stronger SOC (OR = 6.04, CI = 2.62–13.91). Individuals with no dental anxiety/dental fear had a mean score of the SOC scale higher than individuals with dental anxiety/dental fear (MD = 5.39, CI = 2.21–8.56). Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the result of a higher mean score of the SOC scale among individuals with no dental anxiety/dental fear remained (MD = 7.38, CI = 3.79–10.98). Risk of bias ranged from low to high. The certainty of evidence was very low.ConclusionIndividuals with stronger SOC have lower levels of dental fear/dental anxiety.
