Credit Rationing and Race in Two Brazilian Cities
In: The review of black political economy: analyzing policy prescriptions designed to reduce inequalities, S. 003464462311688
ISSN: 1936-4814
This paper analyzes a survey of individual microentrepreneurs' (MEI) access to credit for business, broken down by their color or race in two Brazilian cities: Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. The central hypothesis of this study was that color or race is a significant predictor for credit rationing in both cities. However, the most crucial variables to explain the difference in credit approval were primarily related to credit risk operation—adverse selection, moral hazard, and collateral—as expressed by predictor: loan size and credit restriction (inversely correlated to odds of credit approval). The city of the loan operation had a robust explanatory power, with credit more accessible in Rio de Janeiro than in Salvador. Evidence of racial discrimination in the credit markets for business affected not all Afro-Brazilian MEI but blacks compared with white and brown MEI. Lenders could treat potential borrowers based on a pigmentocratic pattern, with this issue appearing more clearly in Rio de Janeiro. Further inquiries in this realm are recommended, preferably with a larger sample and a survey covering all Brazilian domestic territory.
Waiting for the Sun: An Account of the (Precarious) Social Situation of the African Descendant Population in Contemporary Brazil
In: Journal of black studies, Band 34, Heft 6, S. 743-765
ISSN: 1552-4566
Analysis of the statistical data on the economic and social situation of African descendants in Brazil demonstrates severe racial inequalities, which traditionally have been denied according to the conventional wisdom of the myth of "racial democracy." The absence of reliable statistical data has fueled the force of this myth; statistics produced recently are the result of pressure by the black movement. The demographic presence of African descendants in the Brazilian population is examined and social indices are broken down by color/race, income levels, educational standards, and health conditions. Specific Human Development Index analysis, disaggregating data for African descendants and whites in Brazil, demonstrates the severity of racial inequality in comparison with other countries of the world and Africa. The black population in Brazil is still characterized by the absence of collective social rights and by the wide gap separating its living standards from those of the Brazilian European descendant population.

SELF-REPORTED EMOTIONAL DISTRESS AND CREDIT DISCOURAGEMENT: RACIAL DIFFERENCES AMONG INDIVIDUAL MICROENTREPRENEURS IN BRAZIL
In: Journal of developmental entrepreneurship: JDE, Band 29, Heft 1
ISSN: 1084-9467
Research has shown that credit discouragement is one of the most significant barriers deterring small businesses from accessing credit. Although credit discouragement is often associated with diminished expectations for successfully obtaining credit, the underlying causes of this phenomenon have not been explored fully. Adapting Loury's (2021) feedback effect theory to the credit market, this study provides insights into the effect of race and emotional distress on credit discouragement among individual microentrepreneurs (IMEs) in Brazil. Using survey data collected in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, the study confirms that Black and Brown IMEs who reported emotional distress in bank branches had a greater credit discouragement rate than those who did not. We also confirmed Brazil's pigmentocratic pattern of inequality, with higher discouragement among Black IMEs compared to Brown and White IMEs.
In: Em pauta: teoria social e realidade contemporânea, Band 18, Heft 45
ISSN: 2238-3786, 1414-8609

In: Estudos feministas, Band 16, Heft 3, S. 949-969
ISSN: 1806-9584
In: Revista Tecnologia e Sociedade, Band 17, Heft 46, S. 187
ISSN: 1984-3526
