Turn on the light on science: A research-based guide to break down popular stereotypes about science and scientists
"Scientists deserve public recognition. The ways that they are depicted, however, are severely limited in physical and personal traits, helping to establish and enhance stereotypes under the general title of 'scientist'. These stereotypes range from the arrogant researcher who wants to rule the world, to the lab coat wearing 'nerdy' genius, but all generally fall to an extreme view of an existing perception of what a scientist should look and be like. For example, the popular image of 'a scientist' overlooks the presence of women almost entirely unless attributed to specific subjects and/or with narrow character depictions. The implications can be far-reaching. Young people, being heavily swayed by what they see and hear in the media, may avoid scientific careers because of these limited or unflattering portrayals of the scientific community, regardless of whether they reflect real life. Based on findings from the Light'13 project, this book examines such stereotypes and questions whether it is possible to adjust people's perception of scientists and to increase interest in science and scientific careers through a series of specific actions and events."
Il tempo ? dalla nostra parte. Scenari per l'Italia al 2030
The Quaderno presents the results of a research project based on a policy-Delphi survey carried out in Italy in 2003, whose aim was to design population and society scenarios up to 2030. The study is part of a Europe-wide research project - coordinated by IRPPS and funded by EU Commission - conducted in 15 European countries, namely: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Czech and Slovak Republic, Rumania, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Switzerland. An additional policy-Delphi was conducted at level of European international organisations. In carrying out the national studies all the countries followed the methodology developed by IRPPS that is an innovative multi-method approach which integrates Delphi, Appreciative Inquiry and SWOT Analysis. The method is described in a specific chapter of this volume, while the questionnaire is presented in Annex 1. Scenarios were designed following the inputs, comments and suggestions provided by a panel of the 15 experts. Experts - who were neither academics nor demographers- were all persons who may well influence the policy strategies of the country because of their professional or institutional role. Three main issues were dealt with in terms of policy developments: the elderly, family and fertility and 91 gender roles. All the issues are strictly interrelated and they animate the Italian scientific, political and social debate. At the end of the four rounds of the Delphi survey we obtained two scenarios. The first one, called "The elderly as a challenge for a better society" was rated highly desirable and highly feasible by the panellists and it is focused on the growth of the elderly population. The positive approach to the future is highlighted by the fact that the core of the demographic issue concerning ageing is no longer its economic sustainability, but rather the fact of positively considering the increased longevity and introducing policies to foster the birth of a population in which the various generations collaborate and benefit from an useful exchange. The second scenario called "Work and Solidarity: the focus of the policy action for a better future", is highly desirable but only possibly feasible according to panellists. All the policy objectives aim at combat discriminations, eliminate poverty and support the participation into labour market of the weakest population groups: elderly, women and parents ; Il Quaderno presenta i risultati di un'indagine di tipo Delfi condotta in Italia nel 2003 che aveva obiettivo di disegnare scenari al 2030 in termini di grandi priorit? politiche e di azioni concrete destinate a realizzarle.
