Bilder von Gewalt, Krieg und Zerstörung steigen auf, wenn der Blick sich auf die arabische Welt richtet. Auch die arabische Literatur des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts ist von diesen Themen geprägt. Nicht nur viele arabische Gegenwartsromane handeln von körperlicher und politischer Gewalt, von Zensur, Krieg, Verletzung der Menschenrechte und staatlichen Repressionen, auch in der zeitgenössischen arabischen Dichtung spielen diese Themen eine wichtige Rolle. Was hier auffällt, ist eine oft provokante Aufarbeitung von Krieg, Gewalt und Tod, in der das poetische Ich als pathetisch überhöhte Leidensfigur auftritt. "Leidend die Welt zu überwinden", dem erfahrenen Unrecht mit leidenschaftlichem "Gegenleiden" zu begegnen, diese von Erich Auerbach christlicher Weltfeindschaft zugeschriebene Lebenshaltung scheint auch das Motto vieler Gedichte arabischer Autoren zu sein. Die Qualen an sich und der Welt werden nicht selten apokalyptisch dramatisiert, das eigene tragische Ende erscheint als Selbstopfer und so letztlich als moralischer oder auch transzendentaler Sieg, bei dem der Autor sich als Christus am Kreuz, als Zarathustra oder Prophet und damit als Erlöserfigur imaginiert, umgeben von blutigen Horrorszenarien der Gewalt und Angst. Warum zeugen so viele zeitgenössische Gedichte, Romane und Dramen mit derart drastischen Bildern von Krieg, Gewalt und Tod, und welche Funktion haben diese Themen in der Literatur und in der Gesellschaft? Handelt es sich bei den oft pathetischen Selbststilisierungen um narzisstischen Manierismus und maßlose Selbstüberschätzung, oder sind sie vielleicht eine erschütternde, aber schlicht angemessene literarische Antwort auf eine kaum mehr zu ertragende, rücksichtslose und grausame Realität in der arabischen Welt? Um diesen heiklen Fragen auf den Grund zu gehen, sollen in diesem Beitrag einige Gedichte und einige literarische Grenzfiguren untersucht werden.

This edited volume is an open access title and assembles both the historical consciousness and transformation of the MENA region in various disciplinary and topical facets. At the same time, it aims to go beyond the MENA region, contributing to critical debates on area studies while pointing out transregional and cultural references in a broad and comparative manner.

This essay collection is the outcome of interdisciplinary research into political, societal, and cultural transformation processes in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the Philipps-Universität in Marburg, Germany. It builds on many years of collaboration between two research networks at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies: the research network "Re-Configurations: History, Remembrance and Transformation Processes in the Middle East and North Africa" (2013–19), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the Leibniz-Prize research group "Figures of Thought | Turning Points: Cultural Practices and Social Change in the Arab World" (2013–20), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Both research projects' central interest lay in the political, social, and cultural transformation that has become especially visible since 2010–11; we conceptualize this transformation here using the term "re-configurations." At the core of the inquiry are interpretations of visions of past and future, power relations and both political and symbolic representations.

This volume focuses on Entanglements as a cross-field and cross-lingual concept to generate a new approach to the region and its inner interdependencies as well as exchanges with other regions. Eminent researchers conceptualize Entanglements through the description of various thematic fields and actors in motion, addressing culture, politics, social affairs, and economics.

This book is about the relations between literature, society and politics in the Arab world. It is an attempt to come to terms with the changing conceptualizations of the political in Arabic literature (and to a certain extent theater and the visual arts) in recent modern history. It examines historical and contemporary conceptions of literary commitment (iltizām) and how notions of 'writing with a cause' have been shaped, contested, re-actualized since the 1940s until today.
Starting with the present day, it looks at literary practices during the 'Arab Spring,' then tracks back to the beginnings of literary politicization during the 1940s and 1950s, subsequently crosses the historical caesura of the late 1960s to consider competing re-conceptualizations of literary engagement in the 1970s and 1980s, before finally returning to the 1990s through to 2011. The chapters reexamine critically both current and historical notions of the political in modern Arabic literature as well as the legacy of iltizām as a term and an agenda. They discuss literary commitment not solely as a (completed) period in Arabic literary history but also as a vivid, changing and continuing idea that questions the role of literature and the author in and for a society. Even though a number of seminal research volumes have been published on the conceptual history of Arab literary engagement in English language, there remain no book-length studies on the ongoing relationship between the literary and the political from the 1940s until today. Therefore, what makes this volume unique and outstanding is, firstly, its point of departure in approaching the question of the 'new political' in Arabic literature through an interrogation of iltizām's longevity as both a historically adaptable and adaptive literary concept—something which the 'Arab Spring' has forcefully brought back to our minds. Secondly, this volume brings together the attempts, propositions, and research results of both established and upcoming scholars in the field of modern Arab literary and cultural history, all of whom have initiated and undertaken exceptional contributions regarding the issue. As such, this book fills a gap in the field of Arabic Literary Studies as it explicitly reconsiders the legacy of Arab literary commitment and its manifold and heterogeneous conceptions in the light of recent and present day developments.
