Le PASOK et le PSOE, deux des plus éminents partis de la social-démocratie européenne ont vu leur puissance électorale décroitre de façon dramatique ces dernières années. A partir de ce constat on mesure l'ampleur des conséquences de leur gestion de la crise de la dette de l'après 2009. Cependant il ne s'agit là que d'une part de leur histoire. Au cours des deux dernières décennies le PASOK et le PSOE ont établi un paradigme socialiste reposant sur une articulation de politiques économiques néo-libérales avec un progrès social et des réformes culturelles. Alors que ce panachage leur a permis de dominer les élections, il a permis la reproduction d'un modèle problématique de production et de répartition peu à même d'écarter la crise. Ce sont ces échecs, encore plus patents en Grèce, qui sont à la racine des difficultés actuelles et qui semblent signifier la fin du traditionnel paradigme socialiste de l'Europe méridionale.

PASOK and PSOE two of the best performing parties of the European social democratic family have seen their electoral strength decrease dramatically in recent years. This is to an extent an outcome of their management of the post-2009 debt crisis. However, this is only part of the story. In the last two decades PASOK and PS OE established a socialist paradigm based on an articulation of neo-liberal economics with progressive social and cultural reforms. While this mix enabled them to dominate elections, it allowed the reproduction of a problematic model of production and distribution which did little to avert the crisis. It is these failures, more acute in Greece, which are at the root of their present difficulties and which seem to point to the end of the traditional southern-European socialist paradigm. Producing scientific knowledge that can inform solutions and guide policy-making is one of the most important functions of social science. Nonetheless, if social science is to become more relevant and influential so as to impact on the drawing and execution of policy, certain measures need to be taken to narrow its distance from the policy sphere. This decision is less obvious than it seems. Both research and experience have proved that policy-making is a complex, often sub-rational, interactive process that involves a wide range of actors such as decision makers, bureaucrats, researchers, organised interests, citizen and civil society representatives and research brokers. In addition, social science often needs to defend both its relevance to policy and its own scientific status. Moving away from instrumental visions of the link between social research and policy, this collective volume aims to highlight the more constructed nature of the use of social knowledge. Hence, it addresses issues pertaining to the epistemology of social scientific research, the role of social interaction and power in the production of knowledge and the institutional links that bridge research and policy. The authors' contributions promote a lively, scholarly discussion on democracy and participation as well as on values and capacities in the scientific making of policy that will enlighten the interested reader and enrich the academic and policy debates, while suggesting concrete proposals for capacity-building.
