Between 1904 and 1908, about eighty per cent of the Herero and fifty per cent of the Nama perished in what is today known as the first genocide of the twentieth century that took place in today's Namibia under German colonial rule. Over decades, the German government has not officially recognized the genocide as such. Jephta U. Nguherimo is one of the descendants of survivors of this genocide and today lives in the United States. In his poetry book unBuried-unMarked–The unTold Namibian story of the Genocide of 1904-1908: Pieces and Pains of the Struggle for Justice that he has self-published in 2019, J. Nguherimo gives insights into long-lasting impacts of the Herero and Nama genocide, into ways of dealing with painful memories, and into processes of healing in post-genocidal contexts. This art review gives an overview of the book and discusses main features of this artistic piece: the way the poems are linked to pictures, the use of different languages, the presence of nature or the importance of intergenerational bonds. It reflects on the author's leitmotiv: dialogue, empathy and compassion, and on the impact these could have had or could have on negotiations between Germany and Namibia on the recognition and reparation of the genocide.

Taking its starting point from a socio-anthropological study combining
biographical interviews, semi-structured interviews and ethnographic
observations collected between 2016 and 2018 in Germany, France and the United
States among Ovaherero and Nama activists, and also members of different
institutions and associations, this article focuses on the question of human
remains in the current struggle for recognition and reparation of the genocide
of the Ovaherero and Nama from a transnational perspective. First, the text
shows the ways in which the memory of human remains can be considered as a
driving force in the struggle of the affected communities. Second, it outlines
the main points of mismatches of perspective between descendants of the
survivors and the responsible museums during past restitutions of human remains
from German anthropological collections. Third, the article more closely
examines the resources of Ovaherero in the United States in the struggle for
recognition and reparation, the recent discovery of Namibian human remains in
the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the questions that
it raises.

Die Entwicklung des biografischen Ansatzes lässt sich zum einen durch die Bedeutung des Strukturalismus erklären, der ca. 30 Jahre lang die französische soziologische Szene stark dominierte. Ein wissenschaftsgläubiger Ansatz entwickelte sich, der danach strebte, die Methodik der Sozialwissenschaften an den naturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsmethoden zu orientieren. Bourdieus provokanter Satz: "Es ist vielleicht gerade der Fluch der Humanwissenschaften, dass sie es mit einem sprechenden Objekt zu tun haben", zeugt von dieser Stimmung. In diesem Zusammenhang wird nachvollziehbar, weshalb Bourdieu mit einer solchen Vehemenz auf den biografischen Ansatz reagierte und weshalb Lebenserzählungen nur sehr eingeschränkt von den Soziologen verwendet wurden, die zwischen 1960 und 1990 das Establishment der französischen Soziologie dominierten. Zum anderen ist eine lange Unkenntnis der deutschen verstehenden Soziologie zu beobachten, die erklärt, weshalb die Begründer des biografischen Ansatzes in Frankreich sich auf die ethnografische Tradition stützten, anstatt auf den naheliegender scheinenden deutschen verstehenden Zugang. Bis heute bildet das 2002 erschienene Werk von Patrick Watier, Professor an der Universität Straßburg, eine der einzigen Einführungen in diesen Zugang in Frankreich. (ICF2)

Ausgehend von einer multi-lokalen Studie, die biografische Interviews und ethnografische Beobachtungen vereint, untersucht dieses Buch intergenerationelle Transmissionsprozesse in Familien marokkanischer Herkunft in Frankreich und Deutschland. Ausführlich behandelt die Autorin die von den Familien entwickelten "Strategien der Selbstachtung" und erörtert das Konzept des historischen Transnationalismus, das postkoloniale und transnationale Forschungsperspektiven verbindet.

"Den Ausgangspunkt unserer Diskussion bilden zwei Forschungsprojekte: das eine zu den familiären, sozialen und politischen Rollen von Frauen in Algerien, die aus unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhängen stammen, und das andere zur Übertragung von Erziehungspraktiken in - in Frankreich und Deutschland lebenden - Familien, die aus Marokko stammen. Im Anschluss an eine Reflexion über den Prozess der Einsozialisation in Forschung und darüber, wie in diesem Zusammenhang die Hinwendung zur sozialanthopologischen Forschung in einem anderen Land zustande kommen kann, befassen wir uns mit methodologischen und theoretischen Implikationen von Feldforschung im Ausland. Wir betrachten die Auswirkungen dieses Ansatzes auf die Beziehung zwischen Interviewerin und Informantin und die Folgen für die Theoriebildung, außerdem geht es uns darum, wie der sozialanthropologische Ansatz biographische Interviews ergänzen und Phänomene sozialer Schichtung aufdecken kann. Der Aufsatz zeigt, dass sozialanthropologische Forschung im Ausland sich besonders gut dafür eignet, Phänomene der transnationalen Migration zu untersuchen und eine Perspektive zu verfolgen, die das 'Hier' mit dem 'Dort' verbindet." Résumé Face à la demande de protection en matière d'asile, la ville de Strasbourg s'est engagée depuis 2015 à développer une politique volontariste pour répondre aux besoins d'autonomie et d'inclusion des migrants. En 2017, la municipalité a adopté une politique visant à examiner les « droits incomplets » des familles de migrants pour améliorer le statut de certains de leurs membres. Ainsi, le droit à l'éducation, qui confère aux enfants un statut privilégié, n'est pas considéré isolément mais comme un argument pour compléter les droits de leurs parents au statut plus précaire. Afin de mettre en œuvre cette politique d'accueil inconditionnel, la municipalité a engagé en 2018 une équipe mobile de travailleurs sociaux spécialisée dans l'accompagnement des « ménages à droits incomplets » ( mdi ). Auparavant, elle avait réuni, entre 2017 et 2020, un groupe d'acteurs concernés par la vie quotidienne des migrants. En tant que chercheurs du collectif migreval, qui a conçu une base de données regroupant des entretiens réalisés auprès de migrants, de leurs descendants et de professionnels avec l'objectif d'évaluer les dispositifs d'intégration des migrants et de leurs familles, nous avons participé à ce groupe de travail. Nous avons mené une étude sur les parcours de demandeurs d'asile en quête d'une installation à Strasbourg et réalisé un film consacré aux liens noués par cette population avec les Strasbourgeois. Depuis les élections municipales de juin 2020 et l'épidémie de Covid-19, des questions se posent sur l'évolution que souhaite donner la nouvelle équipe municipale à majorité écologiste à cette politique mise en place par l'ancien maire socialiste. Nous proposons ici une analyse de l'institutionnalisation de l'accueil inconditionnel à Strasbourg et de ses conséquences sur les alliances entre les différents acteurs. Nous poserons aussi la question du lien établi entre un groupe d'universitaires et la municipalité de Strasbourg, à la pointe du mouvement pour le développement des « villes accueillantes » en Europe et dans le monde.

The Dublin Convention defines which EU State is responsible for the asylum application of third country nationals or stateless persons. According to this Convention, the first Member State in which an asylum seeker enters is responsible for the person's asylum procedure. It thereby stands in gross contrast to the freedom of mobility of EU-citizens within Europe. While extensive research has focused on the attempts to build up a Common European Asylum System, mostly taking up an institutional perspective, only limited sociological research has concentrated on the perspective of refugees and on the way they are affected by the Dublin Regulation and react to it. This article explores the biographical impacts of the Dublin Convention and the reaction of concerned individuals to it through the method of biographical policy evaluation. It bases on 29 biographical interviews conducted with refugees affected by the Dublin Regulation in France. It provides an in-depth analysis of three key biographical moments regarding the Dublin Convention: the arrival in France, the process of integration and moments when refugees change the European State they live in after having sought for asylum. It shows that beyond the (intended) impact on the "choice" of the country of arrival, the Dublin Convention often impacts refugees' integration processes in a long-lasting way.

"The major theoretical literature has considered the concept of nation primarily from a macro level. This article explores the question of national belonging departing from an individual's point of view, more precisely from the life story of three migrant women. Migration and transnational practices have challenged the perception of the homogeneity of nations, questioning the idea of fixed boundaries, and showing how different national and social forms of belonging may develop simultaneously through migration experience. Drawing on biographical interviews conducted with three migrant women, Amina El Asri, Gule Yildiz and Zuzana Svitá, the present analysis focusses on the construction of national belonging of the women in an intersectional perspective. Mrs. El Asri, Mrs. Yildiz and Mrs. Svitá originate from different countries (respectively Morocco, Turkey and Czechia). They have different social origins and ages, but share the same sex, their residence in the same city in West Germany and the fact that they all have children. The analysis reveals the profound impact of the socio-historical contexts the women come from on their construction of national belonging, but also of age and of transmission processes to their children. It is mainly through passing on their mother tongue and reshaping their conception of national belonging over time that the women manage to establish strong ties to their children, and contribute, by articulating different lines of belonging, to the redefinition of (trans)nation building processes." Objectifs : Ce numéro de revue a pour objectif
d'étudier la manière dont « faire famille » influence l'accès aux droits et l'insertion de
familles migrantes en Europe (France, Allemagne), en Amérique du Nord (Québec) et à
Djibouti, depuis le Yémen, la Syrie, la Tunisie, le Mozambique ou le Brésil. De même, et
réciproquement, il s'intéresse à l'impact du droit sur les expériences familiales en
contexte migratoire.

Méthodologie : L'approche par l'observation
ethnographique, par le recueil croisé de récits de vie et la reconstitution des contextes
de vie de ces migrant-e-s (dans le respect de leurs paroles et de leur anonymat) permet de
découvrir parfois de manière contre-intuitive les effets des politiques dans leur vie.


Résultats : Il arrive souvent qu'au sein d'une
même famille migrante les statuts juridiques de ses membres soient différents, et donc
leurs droits à être ou non régularisés. Il en découle un travail important que ces
familles - et plus largement, des groupes entiers de migrant-e-s - doivent mener en termes
d'information pour l'accès aux droits de séjour, de travail, d'accès à la scolarité pour
leurs enfants, à la santé, à la nationalité, etc. Rien
ne leur est garanti a priori.

Conclusions : Nous pouvons imaginer combien les
migrations se poursuivront à l'aune des changements climatiques et des troubles politiques
jamais interrompus à travers l'histoire. Gageons que l'approche par l'évaluation des
politiques ou de leur absence, faite par les personnes concernées, sera de plus en plus
nécessaire à l'avenir.

communauté nationale où ces hommes et ces femmes ont migré (Destremau, 2022).

Objectives
: The aim of this issue of the journal is to study the way in which
"making a family" influences access to rights and the integration of migrant families in
Europe (France, Germany), North America (Quebec) and Djibouti, from Yemen, Syria,
Tunisia, Mozambique or Brazil. Similarly, and reciprocally, he is interested in the
impact of law on family experiences in a migratory context.


Methodology
: The ethnographic observation approach, through the cross-referenced
collection of life stories and the reconstruction of the life contexts of these migrants
(while respecting their words and their anonymity) makes it possible to discover,
sometimes in a counter-intuitive way, the effects of the policies on their lives.


Results
: It often happens that within the same migrant family the legal status
of its members is different, and therefore their rights to be regularised or not. As a
result, these families - and more broadly, entire groups of migrants - have to carry out
important work in terms of information for access to residence rights, work, access to
schooling for their children, health, nationality, etc. Nothing is guaranteed a
priori.


Conclusion
: We can imagine how much migration will continue in the face of climate
change and political unrest throughout history. It is likely that a policy evaluation
approach, or lack thereof, by those affected, will be increasingly necessary in the
future.


Contribution
: This thematic issue of the journal Enfances Familles Générations
highlights, from a historical and comparative approach, the impact of the legitimacy of
being part of the national community to which these men and women have migrated
(Destremau, 2022).
