Israel is not the only 'new' state around, but it is one of the few states whose legitimacy is still questioned, and its future affects the future of the Middle East as a whole and probably the stability of the international system all together. The reasons for this unique reality lies in its past and the particular historical circumstances of its birth. This book seeks to update analysis of the political history, contemporary politics, economics and foreign policy of this unique state. The first part of the book provides a general history of Israel since its inception until 2000. This general history evolves around the political development of the state, beginning with its origins in the early Zionist history (1882-1948) and ending with the turn of the century. The second part focuses on three contemporary aspects of present day Israel: its political economy, its culture and its international relations. An epilogue describes Israel's complex international image today and its impact on the state and its future. Providing a solid infrastructure from which readers can form their own opinions, this book offers a fresh perspective on developments both on the ground and in recent scholarship, and is essential reading for students, journalists and policy-makers with an interest in Middle Eastern History, Jewish Studies and Israel Studies.

This article examines the recent Israeli Nationality Law within a historical context. It argues that the law in many ways manifests the settler-colonial identity of the State of Israel and as such the law embodies clearly both the achievements of the Zionist movement and Zionist future designs. The law is not an extreme right-wing document but rather an accurate reflection of the major characteristics of the Zionist settler-colonial movement in Palestine. Like all settler-colonial movements, the Zionist movement strove to include as few Palestinians as possible in it. The incomplete implementation of this goal during the 1948 Nakba has informed Israeli policies since 1948 and are the best explanation for the 2018 Nationality Law.

This article uses a new conceptual approach to the question of Palestine, namely the settler-colonialism paradigm. This paradigm enabled scholars to develop the depiction of Zionism as a settler-colonialist project. However new approaches which have focused on Zionism as a settler-colonialist movement have, in fact, neglected indigenous Palestinian perspectives. The article advocates further refinement to the discourse of anti-colonialism by revisiting early Palestinian perceptions of Zionism. The article also shows that in the early stages of Zionism the movement was clearly depicted as a settler-colonialist project by Palestinian journalists and press commentators of the newspaper Filastin. However the existential implications of such an analysis were ignored by the Palestinian political elite, an oversight which also contributed to the 1948 Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe).

"This article assesses the Israeli settlement policy in the West Bank as the outcome of a strategy formed immediately After the 1967 war and one which did not change until today. Understanding the settlement policy as the outcome of the 1967 decisions challenges the common perspective of the settlements as either a policy developing contrary to the wishes of the Israeli governments or as reaction to the lack of progress in the peace process and retaliation to Palestinian resistance. The historical assessment of the 1967 period is based on new declassified Israeli archival material and the rest of the period is viewed in relationship to that formative time. The main conclusion is that the strategy towards the occupied territories, and the settlement policy, were the continuation of the Israeli 1948 policy of taking much of Palestine as possible and having in it as few Palestinians as possible." L'auteur rappelle les trois positionnements idéologiques des années 1990 dans la société israélienne quant à la guerre de 1948 qui conduisit à la création de l'État d'Israël. Un nouveau courant historiographique a surgi à l'aube des années 2000 – le sionisme néo-classique – soulignant combien la lutte pour la mémoire reste l'un des champs de bataille les plus cruciaux qui tenaille la société israélienne. Le point de vue sioniste néo-classique milite pour un Israël qui s'étendrait sur ses frontières actuelles et sur près de la moitié de la Cisjordanie. L'État palestinien serait réduit à la bande de Gaza et à l'autre moitié de la Cisjordanie. Aucun droit de retour ne serait autorisé aux réfugiés palestiniens.
