Desde el nacimiento de la 'primera generación de estadios deportivos' modernos en Gran Bretaña en el siglo XIX, los estadios han destacado por ser edificios donde con cierta frecuencia se han plasmado los valores político-económicos, socio- culturales y deportivos de cada época así como las condiciones del entorno urbano donde se ubicaban. Con la transición hacia un período postmoderno (post-industrial), la influencia e interconexión de factores globales y locales ha contribuido a la aparición y proliferación de lo que diferentes autores señalan como una 'nueva (cuarta) generación' de estadios y pabellones deportivos postmodernos. Para comprender mejor el origen, el desarrollo y las variadas significaciones asociadas a esta nueva hornada de estadios postmodernos, el artículo, basándose en una revisión bibliográfica multidisciplinar, analiza inicialmente algunos de los principales valores, identidades y significados que han ido asociados a los estadios modernos. Para posteriormente, examinar de qué forma la influencia e interconexión entre factores globales y locales ha tenido en la configuración actual de los estadios (como nuevas catedrales del consumo, atracciones turísticas o iconos de las campañas de promoción de las ciudades) en países occidentales. Transformaciones que son cada día más habituales en muchos de los estadios deportivos contemporáneos, pero que no son aceptadas y entendidas por parte de ciertos colectivos que ven peligrar la esencia de valores tradicionales de los estadios modernos. ; Since their original creation in Great Britain in the XIX century, stadia have been one of the public facilities that have better reflected the political, economic, social, cultural and sporting principles of each historical period as well as the main features of the places where they have been located. To provide a better understanding of the origin, development and meanings associated to what different authors describe as the new (fourth) generation of 'post-modern' stadia, this paper, grounded in a multidisciplinary bibliography, starts with an analysis of some of the main values and meanings that have flourished in relations hip with the world of modern stadia and arenas. It is followed by the study of how global and local transformations have an influence on the new generation of post-modern stadia and the new identities created around these buildings in western countries (such as cathedrals of consumption, tourist attractions or leisure centres). Transformations that have flourished in the last two decades, not without some criticism from specific groups who are afraid of the loss of traditional values linked to modern stadia.

The authors evaluate the role of sport in the construction of a symbolic project for the city of Sheffield. They seek to illustrate that although in regime analyses, the ideological dimensions of the activities of regimes in urban governance are often neglected, regime approaches can provide appropriate frameworks through which to analyze the mobilizing of interests behind the development of a symbolic project, a new image for the city (as a city of sport). The authors conclude that the nature of postmodern politics is such that analysis of symbolic projects is key to understanding regime activity in deindustrializing urban contexts.

The purpose of this chapter is to reinforce the notion that designing accessible and inclusive sport enviroments can have economic, social, and operational benefits and implicity benefits the whole of society. It is primarily intended for those students who might pursue a professional career in the sport venue industry. It can also be beneficial to sport governing body administrators, public servants and industry practitioners. Considering that universal accessibility is a complex issue, the planning, design, and management of stadia should not be the exclusive concern of architects and engineers as it has been in the past, and they should work closely with key stakeholders such as facility managers, contractors, professional experts like DLOs at club level, groups of fans with different disabilities and local official from the early stages. All of them should be familiar with relevant legislation, best practices of venues at global level, along with knowing the needs and expectations of both segments of consumers and spectators
