AbstractThe objectives of this paper are to estimate fertilizer consumption relationships using Bangladesh farm‐level survey data for the year 1981‐82. Various hypotheses were put to a test and it was found that structural, environmental and institutional factors were important in explaining farmers' use of fertilizers for rice crop. The price elasticity of fertilizer demand ranged between −0.72 to −0.78 on cross‐section data. Fertilizers and hired labour were complements, with a non‐price definition while with a price definition they were substitutes.

AbstractThe objectives of this paper are to provide a comprehensive survey of linkages (emerging from the net increase in income in the agricultural sector) to other sectors of the economy. Production, consumption, employment, saving‐investment and foreign trade linkages are discussed and their measurement and various concepts based on input‐output methodology are outlined. The advances on social accounting matrix analysis and partial input‐output models, in which income distribution is explicitly built‐in, are also considered. The methodology of computable general‐equilibrium models is used to conduct policy analysis in many developing countries. It is suggested that policy simulation before and after policy changes can be performed adequately with the help of computable general‐equilibrium models. It is, however, asserted that in developing agriculture, land reform, new technology and credit institutions can promote agricultural growth faster than employment growth leading to increases in productivity growth. This will presumably generate incomes and consumption growth intersectorally and also reduce inequality in the distribution of income if the government policies are correctly implemented.

This paper examines the impact of 'environmental risk' on crop yields, the adoption of new techniques and technological diffusion. In Bangladesh, one of the most important factors affecting farmers' decision making is the environment. Within any given environment, risk attitudes may differ among farmers. These variations will be largely determined by demographic and socio-economic factors and will influence the way in which farmers respond to any given environment. The study considers the impact of both of these risk factors empirically. (DSE)

The objective of the note is to consider the integration of monetary sector in the macro-economic general equilibrium model of Bangladesh. After summarizing the relationships of the real sector in which bank advances or credit can play an important role, the author describes the relationships of the monetary sector and shows the interaction between the real and the monetary sector. The present paper aims at critically reviewing the technical framework of the Third Five-Year Plan of the Bangladesh economy prepared by economists from the Netherlands using the applied general equilibrium approach. The treatment of imports and investment, expressed as a function of income, unsatisfactory in the technical framework of the Plan. (DÜI-Sen)
