Abstract
Identity construction involves drawing a rhetorical boundary between one's own group and others. Using data gathered from a Finnish online forum for Muslims, I study how the practice of temporary (mutʿa) marriage is used to mark a boundary between Sunni and Shiʿa Muslims. Here, I examine the rhetorical devices used by Sunni and Shiʿa Muslims, combining the principle of meta-contrast with the concept of boundary-markers to propose a general model of intergroup boundary dynamics.
