Discussions on the political future of the countries of Southeast Asia tend to focus excessively on speculations as to which person should be the next chief of government or head of state. While these personalities are indeed very influential in shaping the course of events in their countries, they are not likely to significantly alter basic long-range trends, imbedded in the social structure, economic system and political institutions of the respective nation. The author aims at initiating a discussion of these basic underlying dynamic factors in this article. (DÜI-Sen)
