; Democratization, a process that affects the political regime, and socioeconomic and gender relations, has also a sexual dimension. Sexual democratization refers to the adoption of freedom and equality, and other principles of social justice, at the sexual and personal domain. This paper describes and analyzes sexual democratization in Argentina since 1983. Main advances have been in reproductive health and recognition of sexual diversity. The main obstacle is the persistence of illegal abortion. ; Fil: Pecheny, Mario Martín. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Sociales. Instituto de Investigaciones ; Argentina. My reflections on this theme are based on the experiences of Argentina. In some aspects, but not all, these reflections also refer to Latin America as a region. In Latin America, social movements, political leaders, and governments are increasingly framing issues and political responses at a regional (Latin American) level. Regional languages, political initiatives, as well as conventions, treaties, etc., promote social movement integration. "Demonstration effects" (as labeled by dependency theorists in the 1960s and 1970s) and a postcolonial and/or de-colonial discourse also encourage a synergy of advances throughout the region. At the same time, new "South-South" discourses and practices are in vogue, and take the form of social forums, academic collaborations, and shared intellectual projects. In recent years, strengthening democracy and a developing scientific system, which includes the social sciences, sexual issues, have come to occupy a fairly central location. However, there are "buts" to resolve at three levels: political-social, academic-institutional, and research-cognitive. This paper focuses on these issues that still have to be addressed in social research ; Fil: Pecheny, Mario Martín. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Sociales. In October 2012, a new law was approved in Uruguay that allows abortion on demand during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, 14 weeks in the case of rape, and without a time limit when the woman's health is at risk or in the case of foetal anomalies. This paper analyses this legal reform. It is based on 27 individual and group interviews with key informants, and on review of primary documents and the literature. The factors explaining the reform include: secular values in society, favourable public opinion, a persistent feminist movement, effective coalition building, particular party politics, and a vocal public health sector. The content of the new law reflects the tensions between a feminist perspective of women's rights and public health arguments that stop short of fully recognizing women's autonomy. The Uruguayan reform shows that, even in Latin America, abortion can be addressed politically without electoral cost to the parties that promote it. On the other hand, the prevailing public health rationale and conditionalities built into the law during the negotiation process resulted in a law that cannot be interpreted as a full recognition of women's rights, but rather as a modified protectionist approach that circumscribes women's autonomy. ; Fil: Wood, Susan. ; In the sexual and reproductive health autonomy issues are crucial, personal and sometimes very problematic. Our interest is to research different conceptions of "being a patient," put into play as political and social issues of the first order, for example, having to do with the forms of autonomy and social relations of subordination. And issues that have to do with the social construction of the body, individuation and citizenship. Here we explore some empirical and conceptually ideal patient types, depending on their autonomy as an individual capable of judgment and action, and as a subject of rights and responsibilities. Analysis of different situations - some limit (such asthe case of abortion) - allow usto problematize what is meant by "autonomus person" in the field of health and disease. We present the results of analysis on one hand problematize the notion of autonomy of the liberal matrix separating it and putting it in relation to the body and emotionsin the context of interpersonal relationships, and secondly, allow patient operationalize the typology defined according of autonomy from which we (taxpayer, consumer / user, and peer-citizen). ; Fil: Brown, Josefina Leonor.
