The article looks at the new Danish prime-time soap opera "Taxa", asking why a usually devaluated women's genre as the soap opera has succeeded in addressing the entire family in prime time on Sunday evening. The serial is discussed in the light of Christine Gledhill's statement that in the new prime-time soap "melodrama and realism, women's and men's culture, intersect (...) in a particularly productive way". I conclude that while it is true that the male characters in "Taxa" are multi-dimensional personalities, women in this Danish soap opera are not only almost absent as writers and directors, but the female figures are also highly mythologized. Thus the costs of the soap genre going mainstream are marginalization and trivilization of women.
Effective humanitarian aid is dependent on the expertise and experience of humanitarian staff, and it is therefore vital to understand how international humanitarian workers are managed. Most research on expatriate management is in the for-profit sector, but the nonprofit sector is increasingly put on the research agenda. This thesis aims to increase the understanding of expatriate management in the nonprofit sector by looking to a Norwegian humanitarian nonprofit organization; NORCAP. The study draws on research from international human resource management (IHRM) and International Relations, and sheds light on how the international environment of the nonprofit sector influences human resource management. The thesis is conducted as a case study with a holistic and qualitative approach. As such, it is designed to capture the interrelationship between the phenomenon of research, expatriate management, and its context, NORCAP. The study concludes that NORCAP deployments can be characterized as a mix of different types of international assignments. At the same time, their unique context requires them to be handled differently from other expatriate assignments. Secondly, this study argues that short contracts, dual employers and loose employment relationships might lead to the construction of transactional psychological contracts, but that relational contracts might develop over time. This influences the dynamics of expatriate management in NORCAP. Finally, this thesis argues that the flexible, transparent and cooperative way of performing expatriate management in NORCAP could contribute to strengthen humanitarian operations. An important contribution of this study is thus increased understanding of the importance of IHRM for the continued influence of humanitarian organizations in the international arena. ; M-IR
This article explores the dynamics between American modes of self-narration and patterns of foreign policy conduct. Pointing to the continual influence of the Puritan heritage, it joins with those who find American national identity articulated almost exclusively in what I term a liberal and missionary vocabulary. In opposition to conventional assumptions, however, the article depicts exceptionalism and liberalism as highly contradictory ways of making - and making sense of - the world and America's place within it. Furthermore, it shows how such contradictions have repeatedly defined a set of highly inflexible and ultimately destructive dilemmas in American foreign policy. Yet, the article concludes, America need not repeat itself without end: by turning to decisionalist and pragmatic strands in its past America may foster from within not only an alternative to rationalist liberalism, but also a way out of the liberal security-paradox.
