The rapid expansion of the Ecuadorian economy in the 1970s was contingent on the growth of oil exports. Although the benefits were largely distributed in the urban sector, the impact on the rural Sierra was significant. Urban consumer demand led to an expansion in food production, while the high growth rates in the urban services and construction sectors provided employment opportunities for temporary migrants from the rural sector.
