In order to uncover the pol'al, econ & soc effects of domination by imperialist powers on colonies, semi-colonies & spheres of influence the forces of production, production relations, & class structures in peripheral countries should be analyzed against the entire panorama of colonialism, econ expansion, & rivalry. The fundamental drive of capitalism that determines the particular character imperialism assumes in diff historical epochs is the continuous accumulation of capital & its expansion within a world system. Signif diff's in the patterns of capitalist expansionism can be recognized: (1) From the late 15th cent to the middle of the 17th cent commercial capital arose in Western Europe & world commerce grew rapidly. (2) Commercial capital ripened into a dominant econ force until the end of the 18th cent. Foreign markets were sought & plantation-slave labor & settler colonies were established. (3) From the late 18th cent until the 1870's, industr capital arose & gained dominance. The profitability of the old colonies based on merchant capital declined, leading to an intensification of the search for new colonies & a renewal of imperialist rivalry. (4) From about 1880 until the end of WWI, the ascendancy of monopoly capital produced a territorial division of the globe, & a world-wide war of redivision. (5) Since the Russian Revolution, socialism, decolonization & nat'l liberation movements have challenged the hegemony of imperialist states & multi-nat'l Corps. A. Karmen.

This book is about the history of neoclassical international economics, the century-old dominant paradigm of teaching and research in the area of international economic relations. At a time when, in so many of its areas, economics is showing a tendency to go 'back to its roots', a critical historical survey of what has been called 'the queen realm of economics' seems most appropriate. Befitting its title, the prestige of international economics is high among social science disciplines. This book tells the story of that achievement from the beginning of the neoclassical period (1890) to contemporary developments. '...a very helpful account of the historical development of the ideas in international economics. It covers both the real economy and the financial, ie balance-of-payments, aspects. As such it provides a useful perspective on what forms the basis of our understanding of international economic relations. It will be of help and appeal to students and will provide an additional source for those who wish to add to their knowledge in this field.' T.M.Rybczynski.
