Social class inequalities and international student mobility: the case of Brazilian students in the Portuguese higher education system ; Les inégalités sociales et la mobilité internationale des étudiants : le cas des étudiants brésiliens dans le système d'enseignement supérieur portugais
Brazil experienced since the end of the 20th century an important transformation in its education system. This process included the development and expansion of its higher education system as well as internationalization through investment in the international mobility of Brazilian students. This is in line with global trends on the internationalization of higher education. However, Brazil is also among the countries with higher inequalities. Both migration and education are shaped by social class inequalities however, little is actually known about the influence of class belonging in patterns of international student mobility. Focusing on the case of Brazilian higher education students in Portugal – one of their main destinations – this article examines the role of social class inequalities in international student mobility. Drawing on data collected through interviews with higher education representatives in Portugal and a survey and interviews with Brazilian students in Portugal, we are able to identify how the context of inequalities in Brazil contributes to shape both higher education trajectories (namely in the distinctions between attending private or state institutions) as well as the process and experience of international mobility in Portugal. Very importantly, we highlight the role of the political context in Brazil, including the phase of strong public investment in the fields of higher education and international student mobility and hint some changes following the impeachment of former president Dilma Roussef.

The music performance in segregated spaces: the case of Lisbon, Portugal ; Paper presented at the Twelfth International Conference on The Arts in Society, The American University of Paris, 14-16 June
The contribution of arts for the transformation of the city is the result of a tension between domination and resistance, in which the former is linked to commodification and to cities' competition and the latter to the reflexive, critical and disruptive impulses that seem to be intrinsic to a wide array of contemporary art expressions. Hence, it becomes relevant to grasp up to what extent artistic dynamics are connected to quarrels between the forces of the market, political powers and the refusal of the neoliberal model. We would like to focus our analysis in a Southern European metropolis: Lisbon and in the particular case of migrants. Migrants are often economic but also culturally and spatially segregated in the cities where they live, where market models have tended to be dominant and shape artistic spaces. Migrants resist by drawing on origin countries' cultural heritages and references. Music has been a key artistic expression in this process, used both to recreate and remind the culture of the past and the place where she/he came from and to affirm her/his identity in societies where they are or feel marginalized. It has also been appropriated in some cases by cities wishing to promote interculturality and multicultural environments. We develop the idea of Borja (2011) about the importance of valuing original or reconstructed identity elements in urban collectives, feelings of belonging, sense of places and collective memories in Cova da Moura (Portugal) and contrast it with appropriations made by the dominant city model. ; N/A

Gender and migration. A gender-sensitive approach to migration dynamics
In: CeMIS Migration and Intercultural Studies, 3
Considering the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between gender relations and migration, the contributions in this book approach migration dynamics from a gender-sensitive perspective. Bringing together insights from various fields of study, it is demonstrated how processes of social change occur differently in distinct life domains, over time, and across countries and/or regions, influencing the relationship between gender and migration. Detailed analysis by regions, countries, and types of migration reveals a strong variation regarding levels and features of female and male migration. This approach enables us to grasp the distinct ways in which gender roles, perceptions, and relations, each embedded in a particular cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic context, affect migration dynamics. Hence, this volume demonstrates that gender matters at each stage of the migration process. In its entirety, 'Gender and Migration' gives evidence of the unequivocal impact of gender and gendered structures, both at a micro and macro level, upon migrant?s lives and of migration on gender dynamics.
In: Forum qualitative Sozialforschung: FQS = Forum: qualitative social research, Band 19, Heft 1
ISSN: 1438-5627
