Positive neighbourly relationships offer sociability and the opportunity to give and receive practical support. This mode of social interaction may be particularly important in later life, when people spend more time around the home andare increasingly likely to live alone. Building on a political economy perspective, this article uses the General Household Survey 2000 to explore three formsof neighbourly contact in later life: frequent conversations, doing favours and receiving favours. We find that socio-economic assets, such as home- and carownership, increase the likelihood both of having done a favour for a neighbour and of having received one. In later life, men are more likely than women to have frequent conversations with their neighbours; however, there is an interaction between gender and household composition in the exchange of favours. Among women, living alone increases the likelihood of providing and receiving favours; whereas among men, living alone decreases engagement in these forms of neighbourly social interaction.This gender difference may contribute to the elevated risk of social isolation among lone older men.

Determining the behavior of domestic water consumers can facilitate a more proactive approach to water demand management, and serves as the foundation for the development of any intervention strategies that seek to bring about sustained and substantial reductions in domestic water consumption. As part of the European Union (EU) funded project Integrated Support System for Efficient Water Usage and Resources Management (ISS-EWATUS), a household water consumption survey was administered to address the question of how water was used within the home in the EU. The survey was distributed by the University of Thessaly in Greece, and the Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas in Poland. This paper represents the research output of the survey, including the analysis of three major elements pertinent to the behavior of domestic water consumers: end use behaviors; socio-demographic and property characteristics; and psychosocial constructs such as attitudes and beliefs.

Résumé Au cours des dernières décennies du xx e siècle, les recherches sur le genre et le vieillissement se sont, dans une large mesure, concentrées sur l'expérience vécue des femmes âgées. Dans cet article, nous revisitons les notions de vieillissement et de genre, en nous centrant sur l'expérience différentielle des hommes au cours de leur vieillesse, c'est-à-dire en comparant leurs réseaux sociaux à ceux des femmes âgées. Nous étudions en particulier la participation des hommes âgés à des organisations sociales : les valeurs intrinsèques et extrinsèques qu'ils attribuent à leur appartenance et la manière dont cela s'accorde avec l'idée qu'ils se font de la masculinité. Nous montrons que l'importance de l'identité masculine du point de vue de l'estime de soi et de l'indépendance subsiste, et que, sauf pour une minorité d'hommes âgés physiquement, fragiles et financièrement défavorisés, des moyens alternatifs permettant de conforter la masculinité jouent également dans la vieillesse.
